The Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative will be having its first Community Forum on Friday June 6, 2003 where they expect to have about 300 community stakeholders attending.

The forum will take place between 8 am and 2 pm at the USC Davidson Conference Center. The confirmed keynote speaker is Josefina Lopez (co-screenwriter of "Real Women Have Curves" and Boyle Heights community activist) and Mark Ridley-Thomas (Assemblymember-48th District) and Bernard Parks (Councilmember District 8) will deliver the opening remarks.

This conference will offer tangible, practical tools for revitalizing neighborhoods and strengthening community organizations.

The conference is free of charge and offers free parking, a continental breakfast and catered lunch. Conference workshops include such topics as accounting, neighborhood improvement projects, community organization resources, organizational development, fundraising, creating community identity, and case studies of project success stories.

CREATING A NEIGHBORHOOD IDENTITY: Marketing Strategies for Community Organizations Passion Marketing for Issues and Causes will discuss how to create an identity and image for your organization.

KEEPING THE BOOKS #1: Accounting Basics for Nonprofits
Truitt & Strowbridge certified public accountants will teach the importance of keeping straight records, regardless of budget size.

WORKSHOPS II

NEIGHBORHOOD TOOL KIT: Community Organization Resource Bank Learn about the resources available through organizations such as Center for Nonprofit Management (invited), Community Partners (confirmed) and Public Counsel (invited).

KEEPING IT CLEAN: Neighborhood Maintenance Resources Solutions for those common maintenance issues such as trash, graffiti, side-walk steam cleaning from Operation Clean Sweep, City of L.A. Bureau of Street Services, LA Works (invited) and LA Conservation Corps (invited).

A JOB WELL DONE: Project Success Stories Learn directly from volunteers from three communities that have made dramatic changes in their neighborhoods.

KEEPING THE BOOKS #2: Quick Books for Nonprofits Truitt & Strowbridge certified public accountants will teach the basics of Quick Books accounting software.

Drawing on Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative’s (LANI) unparalleled track record empowering 17 diverse Los Angeles communities through capacity building and neighborhood improvement projects, the First Annual LANI Community Forum will train grassroots leaders to revitalize their own local districts. This practical and exciting event will foster the further development of active, inclusive, skilled neighborhood organizations and councils working to build a better Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative is private non-profit tax-exempt organization that jump-starts neighborhood revitalization with community-planned and implemented improvement projects and the development and support of sustainable community organizations.

Nine years after its inception as a ground-breaking demonstration project, LANI has earned national recognition for its success and innovation in substantive community decision-making, non-traditional partnerships and effective neighborhood revitalization.
