Community-Focused Partnership
with KMEX-TV / Univision 34

On Tuesday, February 11, the LAPD Police Commission honored members of the KMEX-TV staff, announcing a new community-focused partnership aimed at reaching the City's Spanish speaking residents.

The five members of the Police Commissioner were joined by Chief of Police William J. Bratton as a presentation was made marking the historic agreement. Mr. Jorge Delgado, President and GM of KMEX-TV/Univision 34, and other Senior Officials from KMEX-TV/Univision 34 and TeleFutura 46 were on hand to receive the award.

For those who may not know, KMEX-TV broadcasts in Spanish on channel 34, and is a major source of information and entertainment for the Hispanic community. It reaches millions of viewers each week.

The Los Angeles Police Department and management of KMEX-TV/Univision 34 announced the specifics of this new partnership, which involves a yearlong informational campaign titled Su Seguro Servidor (Your Trusted Servant).

Commissioner Silvia Saucedo, bilingual herself, explained that this partnership was in the planning for nearly two years, and is designed to provide vital public safety information to the vast, and increasingly growing, Hispanic community in Los Angeles.

Further it will enhance the Spanish speaking community’s perception of the Department.

With the assistance of LAPD personnel, KMEX and TeleFutura 46 will broadcast Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for one year, each month dealing with a different issue.

A sample Public Service Announcement was played for the group. It was of the highest quality, and presented the Department's message with clarity and accuracy.

The PSAs will include information about many topics, including graffiti prevention, transit safety, pedestrian safety, crime prevention tips, etc.

The LAPD will support the campaign by providing Department personnel for weekly guest appearances on KMEX newscasts.

Chief Bratton hailed the partnership as, "...a first ever between the LAPD and a major news organization, focused on providing an important and necessary service to the Hispanic community."

At LA Community Policing we applaud and congratulate the partnership.
