National
"Do Not Call" Registry
by Barbara Boxer
August 19, 2003
Dear Friend:
An almost universal experience for Americans is the unwanted phone
solicitation during dinner. Almost everyone with a telephone has
experienced the inconvenience of telemarketing calls. However, the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has a way to avoid many of these
calls. You can register for the FTC's National "Do Not Call" registry.
The "Do Not Call" registry covers most telemarketers and requires
that they not contact numbers on the registry. The registry does
not limit charities, political organizations or businesses with
which the consumer has a business relationship. Registrations are
good for five years and may be cancelled at any time.
For more information on the registry, including types of calls covered,
you may visit:

To sign up for the FTC's National "Do Not Call" Registry, you may
visit:
http://www.donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx
When you sign up, your request must be confirmed by email. If you
do not have email, or if you want to register by phone. You may
call the National "Do Not Call" Registry at 1-888-382-1222; for
TTY, call 1-866-290-4236. You must call from the phone number you
wish to register. The registry takes several weeks to become effective.
I hope this information is helpful to you. If you have any questions
regarding this or any other matter, please feel free to contact
