Celebrate
National Night Out, Aug 5th
a true community policing event, citywide
There will be a tremendous outpouring of like-minded community policing
enthusiasts across the Los Angeles region, as LA participates in
the 20th Annual National Night Out.
In fact, no matter where you are in the country, you have an opportunity
to celebrate the National Night Out on the evening of August 5,
2003. That's when millions of Americans will simultaneously participate
in these once a year events.
National Night Out is an annual crime prevention campaign sponsored
by the National
Association of Town Watch (NATW).
Matt Peskin, creator of the event and National Project Coordinator,
commented on its success last year, when over 33 million Americans
participated, saying it offers " … a great vehicle to help Americans
become motivated, educated and involved in the safety of their homes
and communities."
National
Night Out is designed to: |
|
Heighten
crime, drug and violence prevention awareness; |
|
Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime
programs; |
|
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; |
|
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods
are organized and fighting back. |
Locally, there are scores of events scheduled in neighborhoods all
over the city, including things like parades, marches, vigils, and
block parties, featuring cookouts, patriotic music and the opportunity
to meet local law enforcement in a casual, celebratory setting.
Community-Police Advisory Boards, service organizations, neighborhood
councils, politicians and peace officers alike support and attend
these family oriented community policing functions citywide.
You can find what your community is doing by simply contacting the
Community Relations Office at you local police station. We've provided
a list of the CRO offices for each LAPD Division below.
Here's but a sample of what's planned to wet your appetite. Just
check with your CRO officers to find what's happening in your area:

BJC's
National Night Out On Crime
Budlong, Juliet and Catalina Block Club invite you to join with
us on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at 6:15 pm, for our 1st National
Night Out On Crime. We invite you to participate in a peaceful
walk through the neighborhood; our purpose is to bring attention
to the growing blight and alarming wave of lethal violence that
has plagued our community.
The Budlong Tunnel is our designated problem area; it is the
Santa Monica {10} Freeway underpass located at Budlong Avenue
and 22nd Street. For more than 15 years the residents have combated
the illegal dumping at this location.
Our group will canvass through the neighborhood distributing
brochures and other pertinent informative community information.
We will assemble Salvin Elementary School located at 1925 Budlong
Avenue at 6:15 p.m. with our potluck dishes. We will leave the
school at 7:00 p.m. The walk will end under the Budlong Tunnel
with a community Prayer led by Rev. Al Washington, clergy staff
from First African Methodist Episcopal Church pastored by Rev.
Cecil Chip Murray.
The event will be followed by a block club potluck. All beverages,
plates and silverware will be provided courtesy of BJC Block
Club.
Please let me know if you plan to participate and what dish
you would like to bring for the potluck. Hope to see you there.
Thank you and God Bless.
