SPECIAL FUN GAMES
FACT SHEET
THE SPECIAL
FUN GAMES is a project of Volunteers of East Los Angeles (VELA),
a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap between
dedicated individuals who wish to make a difference in the
community and community-based projects in need of a helping
hand. It is the intent and purpose of this organization to
exceed the basic needs in and around East Los Angeles. Various
projects and programs will be implemented for the purpose
of including all members of the local community in the delivery
of services.
The SPECIAL FUN GAMES is a program for the physically and
mentally challenged members of our community. These games
are planned social, daylong outdoors Olympic type games.
The games include opening ceremonies with an athlete parade,
followed by such competitions as a race for the blind, wheelchair
races, softball toss, 50-yard dash, volleyball, as well as
carnival booth type games. The athletes are provided with
a SPECIAL FUN GAMES T-shirt, lunch, and a merit medal. Our
motto is 'THERE ARE NO LOSERS, ONLY WINNERS!! The event is
at no cost to the participant.
The SPECIAL FUN GAMES Committee is comprised of members from
the community, Representatives from Legislative Offices, and
other Non-Profit organizations, and local business people,
who along with volunteers donate their time and resources
to put the games together each year.
The games will take place at Belvedere Park, Los Angeles County,
Parks and Recreation Department are once again hosting the
games on Saturday, October 18, 2003.
