A sales tax increase to hire more police, sheriff and law enforcement
agencies throughout Los Angeles County trailed Tuesday and appeared
to be falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass.

The Los Angeles City Council mounted a last-ditch legal effort Tuesday
to block the closure of a Van Nuys hospital, but a medical center
spokeswoman said the deal had already been cleared.
