LAPD Recruiting
a rewarding career . . .

Greetings from the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department. The following is a message regarding our new recruitment efforts. We hope you find the information useful. You are encouraged to continue to visit our Web site at www.LAPDonline.org as it has grown to over 10,000 pages since its inception in 1998, and our newly, redesigned www.JoinLAPD.com website.

Today marks the launch of a new, cutting edge LAPD recruitment campaign. This innovative, advertising campaign by the City Personnel Department, centers around three action-packed episodes, in the style of movie trailers, featuring exciting police scenarios featuring real officers not actors.

Too many people have incorrectly come to believe that there is a hiring freeze at the LAPD. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are actively hiring and that is why we have designed a whole new campaign, which successfully secured several hundred thousand dollars in donations, based on an extensive benchmark survey, market research and focus groups input.

The grabbing element of our new campaign, the recruitment trailers, exemplify the officers fighting crime and helping citizens all around Los Angeles in some of the Citys most recognizable spots from the 6th Street Bridge downtown to the boardwalk in Venice. Each trailer is a quickly cut, musically driven representation of an LAPD officers typical 12 hour day.

This is a new and creative approach to police recruitment. The entire campaign is tied together unmistakably with billboards that stand out across the city with live shots from the film, radio ads featuring live sound from the films, movie theaters screening the trailers before live movies and a newly redesigned www.JoinLAPD.com website.

In addition, the LAPD has entered into a marketing partnership with Monster.com to facilitate a method to view the film across multiple recruiting portals.

This integrated campaign is more than an ad, more than a press release and more than an event. It is the sum total of a variety of activities that, taken together and planned out on a detailed timeline, support the overall goals of the LAPD to hire more police officers.

Our City's testing process is extremely thorough and competitive. To meet our needs, we will need to attract 800 to 1,000 new applicants each month. For us, Homeland Security begins in Los Angeles. Becoming an Officer is an important and exciting way to contribute directly to the safety of your community.

The current starting salary is well over $50,000 and the LAPD offers a flexible work schedule for many patrol and special assignment units. Depending on assignment, available schedules include three 12-hour days and four 10-hour days. There are numerous other rewards associated with being an LAPD police officer, as well. For individuals who desire a rewarding and challenging career that comes complete with a chance to serve the community, great benefits, and flexible work schedules, this is the time to make a difference by becoming a Los Angeles Police Officer.

The Mayor and I share the goal of making Los Angeles the Safest Big City in America. To make that goal a reality, we need to consistently attract the highest quality applicants to the Department. This is an excellent time to consider a career with one of the worlds premier law enforcement agencies.

The LAPD is looking for the best and brightest individuals those who have the aptitude and sense of commitment - those who want to help their community, and who want to make a difference. The LAPD's goal is to provide the highest level of professional public service to the wide range of ethnic and culturally diverse groups that make up Los Angeles.

We have several classes in the Academy right now and will be starting a class of at least 50 recruits in December 2004. Also, we aim to hire up to 430 officers this fiscal year, starting with approximately 60 cops in February, March, April, May and June of 2005. The City is continually looking at ways to increase the LAPD by an additional 1,700 police officers over our current deployment of 9,095 active officers.

I encourage you to see the recruitment trailers playing in Los Angeles, set to be shown first on the big screens of Magic Johnson and Los Angeles Metropolitan Theaters and on www.JoinLAPD.com. And, watch for the faces of the recruitment film on billboards across Los Angeles. Also, visit our website to see why our motto, "To Protect and To Serve," is the driving element of what makes our law enforcement agency one of the most famous and admired police forces in the world.

WILLIAM J. BRATTON
Chief of Police
