EDITOR'S NOTE: We post this request on behalf of LACP's good
friend, Luisa Ashley , whose son, Anthony, was killed in a gang
related home invasion robbery in Highland Park. One of his killers
has been caught, tried and recently convicted. The second one is
still at large.
We have followed the case since LA Commuity Policing was founded
in early 2002. Luisa has become very active in the fight for victim's
rights, and we applaud her efforts. You can email Luisa about
her work at AnthonysanAngel@msn.com

Our Dearest State
FORCE 100 Co-Chairs:
Help! Help! Thank you for your determination and courage to “fight
the battle”. However, it seems we may have a new concern, it may
be unfounded, but we have to go after it, as we cannot get a satisfactory
response. It has been said, Senator Kerry is in opposition to the
proposed Victim’s Rights Amendment, and if that is true, it has
taken on a new and dangerous meaning.
We have tried so very hard to keep “S. J. Res. 1” a non-partisan
issue, which it certainly should be. Murder, rape and all violent
crimes are truly not partisan. However, we suddenly may have a problem
in that area.
If Senator John Kerry is opposed to the Amendment, then the politicians
vying for an opportunity to be his Vice President, or possible other
administrative positions, suddenly may feel the need to follow Kerry’s
lead! So, that puts us in a situation where we must make certain
that Senator Kerry feels obligated to support the proposed Crime
Victims Rights Amendment.
Following is suggested possible wording for you to fax to his office
or make phone calls. His e-mail is shut down and apparently he now
has only a web form. Because of security for legislators, the U.S.
Mail takes forever and may not arrive prior to the Senate vote.
We must flood Senator Kerry’s office with requests for fair justice
and make certain he is on the side of giving victims some of the
rights enjoyed by criminals.
Senator Kerry’s contact information is at the bottom of this e-mail.
Lots of love and appreciation,
Collene
P. S. Note: It is exciting, but scary to think we are about ready
to take the vote in the U. S. Senate. Thank you for your very dedicated,
courage and continued loyal efforts, I know it is really tough for
many reasons! Please keep your fingers crossed, say your
prayers and get everyone you can to deluge Senator Kerry’s office
with contacts (or when he is on the campaign trail). We would like
to hear from you if you get any feedback.
In your faxed letter, it might be appropriate to use one or two
of the following lines, but please change and add to these suggestions:
We don’t want the faxes to look alike.

Dear Senator Kerry:
I’m one of the tens of thousands of crime victims requesting
you to be a supporter of the Crime Victim’s Rights Amendment,
Senate Joint Resolution 1, introduced by Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
and Dianne Feinstein, (D-CA).
It would be very disloyal to honest Americans to support criminals’
rights in our Constitution but not the rights of the victims
of violent crimes. As a Presidential candidate, it is would
be even more disturbing if you felt it was O.K. to treat crime
victims as second-class citizens.
Our National law enforcement agencies have endorsed the Amendment
and are requesting your support. It is critical that you accurately
represent your constituents’ desires and the wishes of your
Countrymen. Americans do not want criminals to have more rights
than law-abiding citizens. (The exception of course, is the
ACLU.)
In addition to the Nation’s leading victims’ organizations and
millions of other honest citizens, the Amendment is endorsed
by nearly 30,000 members of the National District Attorneys
Association; The Fraternal Order of Police, which is the world's
largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with
over 310,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges; plus, The International
Association of Chiefs of Police and nearly every State’s Attorneys
General. Every U. S. President, both Democrats and Republicans,
beginning with Ronald Reagan, have supported such an Amendment.
They all realized it was time to rectify some of the imbalances
in our criminal justice system.
Senator, we ask you to join with the people of our great Nation
in support of equal justice for the victims of violent crime.
The accused criminal has twenty-three rights in our U. S. Constitution
and the crime victim does not have a single right in that same
document.
We respectfully request your support and your vote.
Sincerely,
Your name
How you became a victim of crime, or how you relate to crime. |
