Human Relations Commission
Special Emergency Meeting, Feb 22

Dear Community Members,

The Human Relations Commission will be holding a special hearing this Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Because of a number of recent incidents and the concern of potential tensions across the City, the Commission wants to hear directly from Public Officials, leaders of grass roots organizations and faith communities, and from community members at large from across Los Angeles about their concerns.

Based upon what the Human Relations Commission hears from witnesses at this meeting, it is possible that recommendations to the Mayor and City Council will be released to the press and general public on or before February 29, 2005.

A transcript of the hearing will be available upon request by contracting the Commission at 213 978-1660.

Please let all of your contacts and community members know of this important opportunity to bring not only concerns, but solutions, to the table.

Please read and pass along to your folks. We hope you can make it to this very important meeting. Thanks.

Dear Friend:

As you can see from the attached, responding to the stresses and tensions, which are being experienced by many Angelenos, as a result of a number of incidents that have heightened the possibility of community unrest, the City's Human Relations Commission is convening an Emergency Meeting next Tuesday, February 22, from 5 - 8 p.m. in the Community Auditorium of the Exposition Park Recreation Center; it is located at 3980 Menlo Park - immediately adjacent to the Coliseum.

It is our hope that, during this open public hearing, we shall hear from the leaders of several grass-roots organizations, prominent faith community spokespersons, Mayor James K. Hahn, City Council President Alex Padilla and his colleagues, Police Chief William Bratton, Police Commission President David Cunningham III and his colleagues, as well as from men and women from the community-at-large.

It will be our purpose next Tuesday night to identify the causes of communal anger and mistrust before recommending to the Mayor and to members of City Council positive and effective solutions to this crippling problem so as to strengthen the possibility of Los Angeles becoming an authentic "community."

The success of the extraordinary event is dependent upon your participation. Please be with us and do share with us your most dynamic thoughts and the strategies, which you believe will actualize them.

All good wishes,

Lorraine Bradley
President
