LAPD's Juvenile Division

The DAP Program introduces youth to life experiences normally not available to them due to their social and economic status. Additionally, the DAP Program introduces youth to the field of law enforcement and provides physical and mental preparation necessary to make the transition from DAP to the Explorer Program, and other Department-sponsored youth programs. The association with police officers develops a sense of ethics, values and skills that will mature a young person into a constructive, responsible, and productive member of the community.

Program Goals

The goals of the DAP Program are to focus the youth's activities in a constructive and positive direction, learn good citizenship skills, become involved in service to the community and participate in educational and recreational enrichment activities.

Program Criteria

The following self-improvement skills are taught in the DAP Program:

Safety procedures;
Community awareness;
Computer skills;
Public speaking;
Writing and reading proficiency;
Diversity and tolerance training;
Leadership skills;
Drill and marching; and,
Introduction to police reports and forms.

Program Outreach

The DAP Program targets youth, ages 9 through 13, and consists of the following:

Currently, 326 youth are active in the DAP Program at seven Community Police Stations including Central, Southwest, Southeast, Harbor, Wilshire, Pacific and North Hollywood; and,
The program receives most of its referrals from schools, parents and Department personnel.

Program Funding

The majority of DAP Program funding comes from private donations, fundraisers and some grants. The following Area DAP Program received grant funds for FY 2004/05:
