Community Policing project with the LA Sheriff
Police Station Visitors Week

EDITOR'S NOTE: We encourage the community to take advantage of this terrific opportunity to visit, learn about and interact with local law enforcement.  LAPD has also been invited to participte, and may become involved.  The LAPD response is pending.  We hope they'll participate, too.

Dear Community Policing friends:

I am writing to you from the Vera Institute of Justice in New York. As a founding member of the Altus Global Alliance, we are preparing for Altus Police Station Visitors Week, which will run internationally from October 29 through November 4, 2006. This project oversees planned visits between Police Departments and community members to promote dialogue and mutual understanding of community concerns and police services. During visits, community members will assess the station's service to the public regarding five areas tied to international human rights standards. Those stations with exceptionally high ratings, both regionally and globally, will be honored and their best practices will be shared internationally, enabling police to learn from the practices of their peers. Please read more about this project on the attached flyer or on the Altus website: www.altus.org/policevisit. You can also read more about Vera at www.vera.org.

I am hoping that the LA Community Policing website can post this project, as the LA Sheriff 's office has agreed to participate. These visits give citizens a chance to learn about policing in their community and to record concerns about the services provided. These visits also give police departments an opportunity to be recognized for their service to the public and to learn about public needs.

I have attached a project description with some frequently asked questions. Please feel free to take a look at the website to learn more about the Vera Institute and the Police Week project. I have also attached an MS Word docunent that describes the program and answers frequently asked questions.

Let the LA Sheriff 's Office know how they measure up!

As a member of the Altus Global Alliance, the Vera Institute of Justice is planning the Altus Police Station Visitors Week in North America , which will take place October 29- November 4.

This project coordinates visits of local community members to their police station. During these visits, community members will learn about the services provided by their police station and will assess the station by filling out a 20 question Kit- thereby allowing the community to assess the services provided to them. The top three stations in each region will be awarded and their services and practices will be shared both regionally and globally.

Police Week visits are scheduled in 20 countries (and counting) and all materials are available in 16 languages. This project grows out of the Altus member organizations' mutual desire to promote community policing and police accountability at the global level.

To participate, get a group together (3-8 people from the local area) and contact Amanda Andrews : 212 / 376 3094 or aandrews@vera.org.
