Historic Protection for Griffith Park?
Here's How You Can Help

Griffith Park's nomination for Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument status is gaining friends. The Federation of Canyon and Hillside Associations, an umbrella organization of 36 residential associations ranging from Glassell Park to Pacific Palisades has thrown its support behind the initiative. The Los Feliz Improvement Association, the city's oldest residential association and largest in the Griffith Park area, has voted unanimously to do the same. Starting next week, other community groups and associations including neighborhood councils, will consider endorsing the Griffith J. Griffith Family Trust's application. Major city parks with historic protections in place include New York's Central Park, San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Chicago's Lincoln Park, Philadelphia's Fairmont Park, San Diego's Balboa Park, Washington DC's Rock Creek Park and Vancouver's Stanley Park. Clearly, Griffith Park should join their ranks.

Parks and open spaces designated as L.A. Historic Cultural Monuments include Barnsdall Art Park, Chavez Ravine Arboretum, the Eagle Rock, Echo Park, Hancock Park Tar Pits, Lake Hollywood Reservoir and Mulholland Dam, MacArthur Park, Old Stagecoach Trail in Chatsworth, Orcutt Ranch in Canoga Park, Stoney Point Park in Chatsworth, the Venice Canal System, Wattles Park and Will Rogers Park. Surely, Griffith Park deserves no less.
