Looking for the mission of a lifetime? The U.S. Department of Homeland Security headquarters seeks motivated students looking to contribute their unique insight, skills and talents to support the important mission of securing the homeland.

Our headquarters offices offer volunteer internship opportunities for full-time and part-time college or university students during the fall (until mid-to-late December) and spring (until mid-to-late May) academic terms. Academic credit will be awarded in accordance with the appointee's work schedule and his/her individual college or university policies.
 

The Headquarters Volunteer Fellows Program offers opportunities for students to gain on-the-job experience in one of the following fields over the course of an academic semester:

  • Buying/Pricing/Contract Negotiation Communications & Public Affairs Finance & Accounting General Administration/Clerical Health Affairs Human Resources Information Technology Intelligence & Analysis Legal/law Legislative Affairs Policy Privacy
  • Science and Technology

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program, students must be:

a United States citizen,

enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full or part-time degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school,

and, at least 16 years of age.

Candidate finalists must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation for a security clearance.

Application Form and Requirements

The following materials are required to be considered for the program:

  1. Application Form. Complete and sign the application form:
    Headquarters Volunteer Fellows Program application (PDF, 1 page - 125 KB)
  2. Resume. Attach a one-page, typed resume that highlights your professional and academic experiences, technical abilities, languages spoken and awards/honors received.
  3. Personal Statement. Attach a one-page, typed personal statement that addresses one of the following prompts:

    (a) Discuss how an internship at the Department of Homeland Security Headquarters would further your academic and professional development.

    (b) Select an issue facing the homeland security community and write a policy memorandum addressing contributing factors and possible solutions.
  4. Official University Transcript. Attach a copy of your university transcript that clearly indicates projected graduation date. Unofficial copies will be accepted during the application process, but an official transcript and university-certified letter indicating enrollment for the 2009-2010 academic school year must be provided if you are accepted into the internship program.
  5. Recommendation (Optional). Include a letter of reference from an academic or extracurricular source that assesses your personal strengths, abilities and likelihood of success in a role at the Department of Homeland Security.

Application Submission and Review

Application deadlines:

  • Fall applications must be received (not postmarked) by: September 1, 2009
  • Spring applications must be received (not postmarked) by: November 1, 2009

Applications will be reviewed and referred as they are received. Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible before the deadline. All applicants will receive an e-mail confirmation that their materials have been received. Successful applicants will be contacted directly by the interested office. Unsuccessful applicants will receive an e-mail notification of their status.  See submission instructions below.

The application materials should be paper-clipped and placed together in an 8.5" x 11" envelope. Do not staple your application materials . Mail completed applications to:
