To be eligible for this program, students must be:
Application Form and Requirements
The following materials are required to be considered for the program:
- Application Form. Complete and sign the application form:
Headquarters Volunteer Fellows Program application (PDF, 1 page - 125 KB)
- Resume. Attach a one-page, typed resume that highlights your professional and academic experiences, technical abilities, languages spoken and awards/honors received.
- Personal Statement. Attach a one-page, typed personal statement that addresses one of the following prompts:
(a) Discuss how an internship at the Department of Homeland Security Headquarters would further your academic and professional development.
(b) Select an issue facing the homeland security community and write a policy memorandum addressing contributing factors and possible solutions.
- Official University Transcript. Attach a copy of your university transcript that clearly indicates projected graduation date. Unofficial copies will be accepted during the application process, but an official transcript and university-certified letter indicating enrollment for the 2009-2010 academic school year must be provided if you are accepted into the internship program.
- Recommendation (Optional). Include a letter of reference from an academic or extracurricular source that assesses your personal strengths, abilities and likelihood of success in a role at the Department of Homeland Security.
Application Submission and Review
Application deadlines:
- Fall applications must be received (not postmarked) by: September 1, 2009
- Spring applications must be received (not postmarked) by: November 1, 2009
Applications will be reviewed and referred as they are received. Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials as soon as possible before the deadline. All applicants will receive an e-mail confirmation that their materials have been received. Successful applicants will be contacted directly by the interested office. Unsuccessful applicants will receive an e-mail notification of their status. See submission instructions below.

The application materials should be paper-clipped and placed together in an 8.5" x 11" envelope. Do not staple your application materials . Mail completed applications to:
