City Controller Posts Salaries of Virtually Every LA City Employee Online
August 6, 2010
(LOS ANGELES) – Continuing her efforts to make City government more transparent, Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel today unveiled an online searchable database of salaries for virtually every City employee in the City of Los Angeles. Los Angeles becomes the largest City in America to post a comprehensive list of City employee salaries. The database can be accessed at: http://controller.lacity.org/index.htm “In light of what happened in Bell, I thought it was important for Los Angeles to set an example and post the salary of every City employee online,” said City Controller Wendy Greuel. “The public’s trust has been broken as a result of the recent scandal in Bell. This is an important step to provide greater transparency and openness in how taxpayer dollars are spent.”
The Controller’s database will show every position in the City - from the highest paid to the lowest paid - sorted by Department and the position’s corresponding salary. The database will be updated in the near future to reflect actual compensation for employees, such as salary reductions through voluntary salary waivers, furloughs and additional pay accrued through overtime. The Department of Water and Power (DWP) and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) employees are not listed because the City Controller’s office does not manage their payroll, though the Controller has encouraged them to post their salaries as well.
“Angelenos have a right to know how their taxpayer dollars are being spent, and I think this is an important step in that direction,” said City Controller Wendy Greuel. In light of the recent controversy in the City of Bell, there has been heightened public interest in government employee salaries. Controller Greuel’s database, which will be updated quarterly, is the most comprehensive list available to the public to date. |
