Holiday shoppers beware of car break-ins
With the shopping season starting to pick up speed, parking lots and shopping centers are becoming very busy places. But the holiday shopping season also means crime. Shoppers often make themselves easy targets for thieves, leaving valuables, such as purses and bags full of merchandise, in plain sight inside their vehicles. The LAPD wants shoppers to be extra careful during the holiday shopping season. The department's "Lock It, Hide It, Keep It" campaign emphasizes the importance of locking vehicles and hiding any valuables left behind.

Police ID reputed gang member as San Pedro shooting suspect

Police have identified the suspect in custody who they believe is responsible for shooting at a police officer Wednesday in San Pedro. His name is Jesse Perez, and police said he is a 26-year-old gang member. His residence has not been confirmed. No one was injured in the Nov. 17 incident, but the ensuing 12-hour search closed the Harbor (110) Freeway and Vincent Thomas Bridge off-ramps to Gaffey Street, tying up traffic for miles. The search continued into the early morning hours and was ultimately called off.

Officers find ways to carry on

Riverside police Capt. Michael Perea knows the pain will never go away. "It was a calculated, cold-blooded killing," Perea said of the Nov. 7 death of Officer Ryan Bonaminio. "You can never make sense of that." Anytime a law enforcement agency loses one of its members, the wound is deep and enduring. Healing takes time and often comes only with the assistance of counselors, both in-house and from outside agencies, officers say. Riverside police are just beginning that process, dealing not only with their grief but the trauma of knowing Bonaminio was intentionally gunned down.

Pensions

San Diego mayor proposes no pensions for new city hires
If San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has his way, the pensions that city workers collect - and have led to so much public angst over the past decade - will no longer exist for most new hires. Sanders said Friday he'll gather signatures to put a measure before city voters that would eliminate guaranteed pensions for future employees and replace them with 401(k) accounts similar to what many private-sector workers receive. Only police officers and firefighters would continue to receive pensions under the proposed ballot initiative.

GOP readies for DREAM act fight
Senate Republicans and their conservative allies are sharpening their attacks on the proposed DREAM Act that would provide a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrants, declaring it would give "amnesty" to millions - some of them criminals. The legislation, which would apply to undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, has been overshadowed by other big-ticket items on the lame-duck congressional calendar. But Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are now pushing for votes on it this year.

Election 2010

Harris-Cooley race still tight as counties scramble to count ballots
Even as the number of uncounted ballots dwindles, the outcome of the California attorney general's race has not become more certain. On Monday, at least two more counties finished tallying mail-in and provisional ballots and posted final results on their election websites. With these updated totals from Tulare and Madera counties, Democrat Kamala Harris' lead over Republican Steve Cooley shrank by 8,045. Those ballots represent less than a thousandth of a percentage point of all votes cast in the race.
