Crime Prevention Month

October is Crime Prevention Month. Since 1984, the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) has worked closely with the federal family; state, local and tribal government agencies; civic groups; schools; businesses; and youth organizations to educate the public about crime prevention, while promoting awareness of important issues such as victimization, volunteerism, and creating safer, more caring communities.

This first week of October kicks off the month with a focus on home safety. You don't have to completely overhaul your home to ensure your family is safe and secure. Check out these five simple ways from the NCPC, for how you can improve your home's safety today!

And don't forget to check out the activities and tips throughout the month. Weekly activities will be centered on each of these themes:

About the National Crime Prevention Council: The National Crime Prevention Council's mission is to be the nation's leader in helping people keep themselves, their families, and their communities safe from crime. To achieve this, NCPC produces tools that communities can use to learn crime prevention strategies, engage community members, and coordinate with local agencies.

Fire Prevention Week is Almost Here!

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week will be held October 9-15, 2011. NFPA has sponsored the fire prevention campaign since 1922, spreading awareness of the dangers of fires and inspiring individuals to prevent the deaths, injuries, and destruction they cause. This year's theme, “Protect Your Family From Fire!” focuses on how to protect families from fire by planning ahead and integrating simple things into their everyday lives.

Stay tuned to next week's message for fire prevention awareness and preparedness tips.

About NFPA: The mission of the international nonprofit NFPA, established in 1896, is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education. The world's leading advocate of fire prevention and an authoritative source on public safety, NFPA develops, publishes, and disseminates more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October 2011 marks the eighth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

This year's National Cyber Security Awareness Month is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC).

Through a series of events and initiatives across the country, Awareness Month engages public and private sector partners to raise awareness and educate Americans about cybersecurity, and increase the resiliency of the Nation and its cyber infrastructure.

Consistent with the Awareness Month theme that cyber security is our shared responsibility; you are invited to join the thousands of other individuals across the country, who have pledged their commitment to online safety. By signing the MS-ISAC Cyber Security Pledge you are affirming you take security seriously and use good practices both at home and at work.

Pass this information along to those individuals you know in your family, in your community and in those risk management and PS-Prep strategy planning teams where you work.

Click here to find out how everyone can do their part to practice cybersecurity during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and throughout the year.
