National Disaster Recovery Framework Webinar is a Huge Success!

FEMA's Individual and Community Preparedness Division recently hosted a webinar on the National Disaster Recovery Framework (NDRF).

More than one thousand participants, including those from emergency management, all levels of government, as well as the private sector, joined this one-hour session to learn more about the NDRF from various subject matter experts within FEMA's Preparedness and Recovery divisions. Discussion topics included the collaborative Whole Community approach used to develop the NDRF and the ways in which NDRF provides a more inclusive, collaborative, and comprehensive approach to addressing disaster recovery challenges and other issues. The NDRF defines how we will work together as a nation to best meet the disaster recovery needs of individuals, families, communities, and States. Since its release in September, much progress has been made in an effort to implement the NDRF and align it with Presidential Policy Directive 8 (PPD-8).

FEMA Provides Youth-Based Technical Assistance Workshops

Leading educators and scholars in the field of preparedness education consider our nation's youth to be the best envoy for taking preparedness messages home to their families. In order to better prepare our nation's youth to bring preparedness home, FEMA is providing technical assistance workshops to state and local practitioners who support youth-based programs and who are interested in integrating preparedness education into their offerings.

As part of these workshops, participants hear from experts who have developed and delivered some of the most successful youth preparedness programs across the country. In discussing their programs, they also emphasize the following:

  • Getting Started & Engaging Partners
  • Identifying Curriculum
  • Implementing the Program
  • Promoting the Program
  • Sustainment & Evaluation

The next workshop is scheduled for November 30, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. However, you don't have to wait to get started. For more information about integrating preparedness education into your local youth programs, send a message to citizencorps@dhs.gov .

To obtain information about the upcoming Los Angeles workshop, contact Brenda Emrick at bemrick@ceooem.lacounty.gov or call (323) 980-2260. Registration forms are due by Friday, November 18.
