When you can't win with facts, resort to spin
Jack Humphreville, the self-proclaimed LA Watchdog, does not like our December 22 blog, "Pension holidays aren't just 'ancient history.'" In his latest CityWatch rant, Jack is upset with many facts and issues we raised. Let's take apart his spin and insert some facts. We pointed out that if the City had not taken "contribution holidays" and "simply made all its required annual payments, the system would've currently been funded at over 100%." And we noted that the "pension reformers of today remained silent as the government shirked its pension obligations, helping to create the current situation."

LAPD's new jail finally opens downtown
After being forced to leave it empty for almost two years because of staffing shortages, the Los Angeles Police Department opened its new central jail Wednesday. The 172,000-square-foot downtown facility, which carried a final price tag of $84 million, was essentially completed in May 2009. The LAPD kept it mothballed, however, because it required a significantly larger staff to operate than the smaller jail it is replacing. A citywide hiring freeze, imposed as the city plummeted further into its fiscal crisis, prevented the department from hiring the additional detention officers it needed.

No charges against firefighter in alleged stabbing hoax in downtown L.A.
Los Angeles prosecutors will not file charges against a firefighter accused of submitting a false police report in which he claimed he was stabbed by an unknown assailant at a downtown Los Angeles hotel, they said Wednesday. City firefighter Charles Anthony MacDougall was hailed as a hero when he survived an attack in May at the Cecil Hotel while assisting someone in distress. But L.A. police detectives found inconsistencies in the story, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

Los Angeles Police Department selects Cobham EFIS
The Los Angeles Police Department has announced the selection of Cobham to supply Synthetic Vision Electronic Flight Instrument Systems (EFIS) for their fleet of Eurocopter and Bell helicopters. LAPD is the largest municipal airborne law enforcement operation in the world and serves a population base of four million. Operating a fleet of nineteen patrol helicopters in the nation's second largest city, Air Support Division is a lifesaving, twenty-four hour, seven-day a week force multiplier.

Saving police lives
Every year the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund releases figures on the number of American police officers killed in the line of duty. Last year the figures were particularly grim. In 2010, 162 officers didn't make it home to their loved ones. That's a nearly 37-percent increase in line-of-duty deaths over 2009's total of 117. There are two major causes of police fatalities in contemporary America: automobile accidents and malicious attacks. Automobile accidents are the primary cause of untimely death in America.

Democrats seek list of deeper state cuts if taxes are not extended
Democrats may seek to tie deep cuts in funding for schools and public safety directly to tax proposals at the ballot, a move that would raise the stakes of a potential June special election. Gov. Jerry Brown has been coy about what specific cuts he would pursue if he could not persuade lawmakers and voters to extend higher taxes over five years. But Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said Wednesday it is important for voters to know exactly what would happen if they reject additional taxes.

Analysis: Pension deal could end California budget brawl
California Governor Jerry Brown is betting he can win vital support from Republicans for his plan to close a projected $25.4 billion state budget gap by offering to take up public pension reform. In return, he hopes they will back speedy arrangements for a ballot measure to extend tax increases set to expire this year. Extreme partisan politics endemic to California have produced a series of delayed, flawed budgets and one of the lowest credit ratings among the 50 U.S. state governments.

Charles Manson found with second cellphone
For the second time in less than two years, California prison officials caught Charles Manson, mastermind of one of the most notorious killing sprees in U.S. history, with a cellphone behind bars. Guards at Corcoran State Prison found the phone on Jan. 6, according to prison spokeswoman Terry Thornton. Manson was charged with violating prison rules, but not with a crime, because there is no law in California that prohibits inmates from possessing phones. Thornton declined to provide any details about where Manson got the phone, or who he called, saying the case is still under investigation.
