The Internet and social media: Let the user beware!
We're revisiting the topic to remind you once again: use caution online and in the social media world. The reality is, when you create a personal presence in cyberspace, you must always assume that nothing you do will be private, no matter what privacy options you set. An ongoing investigation by the Wall Street Journal underscores our point. It found that one of the fastest-growing businesses on the Internet is the business of spying on users.

In Oakland, shaky funding for police and fire retirement
Oakland City Council's finance and management committee met Tuesday to discuss several city budget and finance issues, the most contentious of which was how to pay for the Police and Fire Retirement System. After several presentations by pension experts and the city's auditor office and treasury office, the finance committee decided it needed more time and further information to discuss the different options before moving the agenda to the entire city council.

Poll: Americans favor union bargaining rights
Americans strongly oppose laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll. The poll found 61% would oppose a law in their state similar to such a proposal in Wisconsin, compared with 33% who would favor such a law. Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Republican legislators in Wisconsin have proposed cutting union rights for most state government workers and making them pay more for benefits. Ohio, New Jersey, Indiana, Iowa and other states with Republican governors are considering similar laws.

The bipartisan Little Hoover Commission plans to release a report today on California's public pensions, complete with suggested changes. The independent oversight commission investigates government operations and devises ways to increase efficiency, improve service and save money. It's been looking at government worker pensions for months.

O.C. lawmakers target labor union pensions
Assemblyman Allan Mansoor, R-Costa Mesa, is getting attention for the bill he introduced Tuesday aimed at eliminating collective bargaining for pension benefits by the state's public employees, but earlier pension-reform proposals by state Sen. Mimi Walters, R-Laguna Niguel, may have a better chance of gaining traction. "Pensions are out of control," Mansoor told the Associated Press. "They have to be brought back in line with the private sector."

Supreme Court upholds California's handling of inmate appeals
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously upheld California's handling of inmate appeals; at least, so far as deadlines go. In a case arising out of a 1986 murder in Sacramento, the Court ruled that California need not set a specific deadline for when inmates file their habeas corpus petitions. Unlike most states, California does not set firm deadlines to determine whether an inmate's petition comes too late. Instead, California simply requires that the petitions be filed "without substantial delay."
