Video shows thieves making off with $3 million in jewels from downtown L.A. store
The Los Angeles Police Department released images of two masked thieves who bored a tunnel into a downtown Los Angeles jewelry store and made off with an estimated $3 million in jewelry. The break-in took place between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Broadway Gold Center at 601 S. Broadway, officials said. The burglars, who wore masks and gloves and carried backpacks, tunneled into the store and cleaned out display cases of high-quality jewelry, according to LAPD detectives.

LAPD database will soon put all of L.A.'s tags in one place
Taggers who leave their marks on public property will soon find their handiwork showing up in a new kind of gallery. City officials and the Los Angeles Police Department are launching a four-division pilot program that will centralize visual evidence of tags to create a database that will be used to gather evidence for prosecution and restitution. The pilot program (building on a previous pilot at Van Nuys Division), includes Hollenbeck, Van Nuys, Harbor and Central Divisions and will test out a new City of L.A. only TAGRS database.

LAPD seeks felony charges against school police officer who faked shooting
Los Angeles Police Department detectives have submitted to prosecutors their investigation into a school police officer whose shooting hoax set off a massive manhunt, Chief Charlie Beck said Thursday. Jeff Stenroos, an officer with the Los Angeles Unified School Police Department, initially said he had been shot on Jan. 19 after confronting a man he caught trying to break into vehicles near El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills. The incident sparked a huge police response that brought much of the west San Fernando Valley to a standstill for hours.

Swastika drawn on sidewalk in front of Wilshire Boulevard Temple
Los Angeles police detectives are investigating a suspected hate crime at a landmark Jewish temple in the Mid-Wilshire area. At about 5 p.m. on Thursday, police officers responded to the Wilshire Boulevard Temple in the 3600 block of Wilshire Boulevard after a woman in her late 50s was seen drawing a swastika on the sidewalk in front of the synagogue. Authorities said they don't believe the temple itself was vandalized but consider it a possible hate crime against the institution.

LA police chief says King beating won't repeat
Twenty years after the videotaped Rodney King beating exposed racial wounds and ignited passions that eventually sparked a devastating riot, Police Chief Charlie Beck said Thursday he's confident a similar police beating couldn't happen again. The Los Angeles Police Department has made sweeping reforms in its use of force and handling of complaints, is under more civilian oversight, and community-based policing has eased tensions in crime-plagued communities, Beck said. In addition, the ubiquitous cell phone means officers are aware they may be taped at any time, Beck asserted.

Five California state worker unions sue to halt furloughs
Against the backdrop of difficult contract talks, five state worker labor unions have asked a judge to order Gov. Jerry Brown to stop what they say are illegal three-day-per-month furloughs. The 44-page filing in Alameda Superior Court, submitted late Wednesday, argues that the furlough policy Brown carried over from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration exceeds limits set by the Legislature, which has final say on what the state pays employees.

Firefighters' union, city of San Jose reach deal to slash pay and benefits
San Jose officials Thursday announced a tentative deal in which city firefighters would agree to reduce their pay and benefits 10 percent for the next two years to avoid further layoffs in the thinly staffed department. The deal requires ratification from the city's 647 firefighters over the weekend and City Council approval Tuesday. But it makes firefighters the first among San Jose's 11 employee unions to reach a deal on the 10 percent cuts Mayor Chuck Reed and the council have sought to help close a $105.4 million deficit in the budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Sirhan Sirhan denied parole in 1968 RFK killing
Parole officials have refused to give Sirhan Sirhan a date with freedom, saying he hasn't shown sufficient remorse for Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's death and doesn't understand the enormity of the assassination that changed U.S. history more than 40 years ago. During four intense hours Wednesday in a prison's small hearing room, Sirhan told board officials of his regret but also said he could not remember the events of June 5, 1968.

Anthem Blue Cross raising individual rates again
A year after Anthem Blue Cross created a public uproar by proposing rate hikes as high as 39 percent, the health insurer is at it again. Many Anthem policyholders who buy their coverage as individuals say the company has notified them to prepare for another rate increase effective May 1. This would create a cumulative rise in rates in excess of 40 percent for some consumers in less than a year.
