LAPD: Hollywood 'party buses' can get out of control
Separate shootings and an accident involving "party buses" that cruise around Hollywood, taking passengers to nightclubs, underscore efforts by Los Angeles police to make sure the partying doesn't get out of hand. LAPD Capt. Bea Girmala of the Hollywood Division said the party buses come from the San Fernando Valley, South Los Angeles, South Bay cities and even from far away as Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In some cases gangs have been involved.

LAPD to announce findings of OIS internal probe

Los Angeles police are set to announce the findings of an internal use-of-force investigation into last year's fatal police shooting of a Guatemalan immigrant. The LAPD issued a news release Monday night, saying the findings of the probe will be announced Tuesday. Police say Officer Frank Hernandez shot Manuel Jaminez twice in the head last September after the day laborer lunged toward him with a knife. Hernandez was patrolling the Westlake neighborhood by bicycle at the time.

Marijuana 'clinic' in downtown L.A. had meth lab, cocaine-making gear, LAPD says

Cops descended on a marijuana "clinic" Saturday, and what they say they found wasn't very clinical. Besides 3,000 pot plants, which could be legit if this was a permitted dispensary, Los Angeles police say they also found a meth lab and cocaine processing equipment at the downtown warehouse, according to reports. The raid at a converted warehouse at South Santa Fe Avenue and Sacramento Street happened about 3 p.m. Saturday. Officers nabbed 20 people, but it wasn't clear if they were all booked, and/or for what.

Beck's law(less) new policy: Flip-flop on impounding cars of unlicensed drivers
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck hit a raw nerve with his decision Friday to stop the practice of impounding for 30 days cars driven by unlicensed -- and usually uninsured -- drivers who are stopped at sobriety checkpoints. His policy change, made on his own authority, was taken after meeting with immigration rights advocates who complained the impound policy was unfair to illegal immigrants since they are not allowed under state law to get licenses and causes them great hardship.

Candidates emerge to replace Mueller at FBI

The jockeying over who will replace FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III has begun, with FBI agents urging that President Obama select the former head of the bureau's Washington field office for the critical position. Mueller, 66, is facing a mandatory 10-year retirement in September after a tumultuous tenure in which he oversaw the crackdown on terrorism after Sept. 11, 2001, and the bureau's ongoing transformation into an intelligence agency focused on preventing attacks.

State Budget Crisis

Brown-GOP budget talks hit a wall
Confusion reigned in the Capitol Monday over whether Gov. Jerry Brown's overtures to five Republican senators to support his budget plan had utterly failed, or whether suspension of their talks is merely a temporary setback. Whatever the case, it appeared that Brown's hopes of placing $10 billion-plus a year in tax extensions on a June 7 special-election ballot had been dashed. Even if a budget agreement eventually emerges, the election will almost certainly be delayed.

Election 2011

Gov. Jerry Brown sets May election to fill Rep. Jane Harman's seat
Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday set a May 17election to replace former Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice). If no candidate wins a majority, the top two finishers, regardless of political affiliation, will meet in a July 12 runoff. Brown was hoping to have reached a budget deal with GOP lawmakers by now, which would have allowed him to call an election in June for both the Harman seat and tax extensions that he wants to help balance the state budget.

Pensions

Scathing report faults CalPERS, former chief executive on Villalobos payments
In a scathing report, a former chief executive of the California public employee pension fund was accused of pressuring subordinates to invest billions of dollars of pension money with politically connected firms. A 17-month investigation also found that Federico Buenrostro Jr. -- along with former pension fund board members Charles Valdes and Kurato Shimada -- strong-armed a benefits firm to pay more than $4 million in fees to consultant Alfred J.R. Villalobos, who later hired Buenrostro.
