Crime alerts for Lake View Terrace, Broadway-Manchester and seven other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in nine L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of LAPD data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Five neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Lake View Terrace was the most unusual, recording three reports compared with a weekly average of 0.5 over the last three months. Broadway-Manchester topped the list of four neighborhoods with property crime alerts. It recorded 22 property crimes compared with its weekly average of 13.2 over the last three months.

Insurance man Jacob Castroll rides to remember Capt. Eaton
The 61-year-old owner of Jacob Castroll Insurance in Studio City, is preparing to take part in a commemorative bike ride from New Jersey to Washington, D.C. from May 8 to 15. He wants to do it in the memory of Los Angeles Police Capt. William Eaton, who died Jan. 13 of cancer. Eaton was the commander of the Van Nuys Police Division, and at 44, left behind a wife and two boys, 7 and 9.

LAPD conducts Sober Graduation Program
The LAPD's 2011 Sober Graduation Program initiatives for the San Fernando Valley attempt to ensure teens are safe on the road. The program targets high school seniors and attempts to raise their awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Police recover $2 million worth of stolen cosmetics
Over half of the remains of a stolen cargo container filled with $4 million worth of cosmetics have been recovered in Los Angeles, detectives revealed Wednesday. A cargo container bound for Washington was reported stolen in Utah last month. The company's loss prevention department traced some of the product to several locations in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Police Department revealed in a press release Wednesday.

Law-enforcement agents seize thousands of marijuana plants in the Valley
Law-enforcement officers carrying search warrants and large plastic bags seized thousands of marijuana plants from indoor pot-growing facilities in the San Fernando Valley on Wednesday in the start of what could be a broader criminal investigation, the FBI said. Searches were conducted in six residences and warehouses in Canoga Park, North Hills, North Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, as well as Palmdale, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.

Judge slams former LA gang leader with 8 consecutive life sentences for 1990s killing spree
A judge guaranteed the founder of the Asian Boyz gang will spend the rest of his life in prison, slamming him Wednesday with eight consecutive life sentences for a mid-1990s crime spree that included eight murders in a quest to make his gang the most feared in Los Angeles. Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry called 37-year-old Marvin Mercado a clear danger to society and said only two of his victims were rival gang members while the rest were law-abiding citizens.

GOP drafts legislative assault on illegal immigration
Congressional Republicans are drafting legislation that would require the federal government to develop a plan to add more fencing, sensors, agents and even drones to stop every illegal entry into the United States. The legislative effort offers another example of how a more conservative Congress has steered the immigration debate away from the Obama administration's two-pronged push for reforms and improved border security, and toward strict enforcement of immigration laws.

Montebello may have trouble making payroll, paying bills
Montebello is so short on cash it may have trouble making payroll or paying its bills in the near future if officials don't take "immediate corrective action," a city administrator warned this week. Interim City Manager Peter Cosentini, in a statement released late Tuesday, also revealed that "the true nature of the city's cash deficit was buried for many years" because of various accounting maneuvers.

Budget options: Temporary taxes, majority vote
Gov. Brown's decision to pull the plug on budget negotiations left Capitol partisans plotting their next moves, which could include a push by the Legislature's ruling Democrats to move Brown's tax-and-cut package to the ballot with simple-majority votes. But that move is all but certain to fracture a fragile coalition, forcing business interests from the fold and pushing labor into a fighting crouch.

Villaraigosa and Boxer are joined by GOP and business leaders in call for more federal transportation money
The scene was highly unusual for hyperpartisan Washington: a Senate Democrat, a House Republican, and business and labor leaders gathered in the same room, all in support of the same issue. But that's just the sight that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who also was there on Capitol Hill, hopes will boost his efforts to secure federal help, even in tough fiscal times, to speed expansion of the region's transportation system.
