Police, FBI conduct huge gang sweep in S. LA
There has been a major crackdown on a South Los Angeles gang. Thursday morning more than 900 LAPD officers and FBI agents picked up 41 alleged gang members and associates of the Baldwin Village neighborhood street gang. "The Black P-Stones have been operating in the Baldwin Village area for decades," said Steve Martinez from the FBI "They have really been a scourge for the South Los Angeles area."

'Gold Card Desk' dismissed some L.A. parking tickets without justification, audit finds
A "Gold Card Desk" that allows the mayor, Los Angeles City Council members and other elected officials to expedite constituent appeals of parking citations -- and possibly have fines reduced or eliminated -- has been uncovered by city auditors, suggesting that some people may have received special treatment in the handling of contested tickets.

Public safety and crimefighting in the age of Twitter
Law enforcement agencies around the country are increasingly reaching out to the public through social networking tools. But navigating cyberspace poses new challenges for cops-and the reporters who cover them. If the nation's law enforcement agencies are not using social media networking, they're missing out "big time" on a key tool for connecting with the public and the press, one of the nation's top police experts warned yesterday.

Police seek missing girl believed to be with gang member
Police on Thursday asked for help in finding a 15-year-old girl who was last seen around Mission Hills and is believed to be with an adult gang member. Jennifer Rodriguez, who had run away from her mother's home in Tijuana, Mexico, was last seen near Sepulveda and San Fernando Mission boulevards on Wednesday at about 3 p.m., according to LAPD. She is considered at risk because she doesn't have a place to live and was recently treated at a local hospital, according to police.

Los Angeles wants LAUSD cop in shooting hoax to pay restitution
The city of Los Angeles wants its money back for the shooting hoax in the San Fernando Valley. The city is asking the district attorney to demand more than $360,000 in restitution from the Los Angeles school police officer reportedly at the center of the hoax. Jeffrey Stenroos is accused of making up a story about being shot by a gunman in Woodland Hills, triggering a massive show of force by police, and a lockdown at El Camino High School and two other schools.

City & State Budget Crises

L.A. budget deal cuts police, fire
After three weeks of contentious hearings, the city council approved a $6.9 billion budget that closes a $450 million budget gap largely through cuts to fire and police departments. Like communities across the U.S., the nation's second-largest city has faced a succession of budget shortfalls. Los Angeles property and sales-tax revenue plummeted during the recession, and the region also suffered as several large employers closed, moved or downsized.

Locals could get more power to tax
A pot tax for police? How about sin taxes for schools? California lawmakers are tip-toeing toward giving cities and schools broad new authority to ask voters those questions. But whether Democrats are truly serious or merely feinting during intense negotiations to place taxes on a future state ballot will probably not be answered until later this summer.

Legislative Analyst agrees with Brown revenue estimate
The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office agreed Thursday with Gov. Jerry Brown's rosier assessment of $6.6 billion in state revenues, issuing a "virtually identical" forecast through June 2012. In a revised budget he released Monday, the Democratic governor relies on the new revenues to help reduce the deficit to $9.6 billion. Brown is still pushing for an extension of higher taxes on vehicles, sales and income to bridge most of the remaining deficit. He also wants to direct funds toward reversing past budget accounting tricks.
