Crime alerts for East Hollywood, Echo Park and 11 other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 13 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of LAPD data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Seven neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. East Hollywood was the most unusual, recording 21 reports compared with a weekly average of 11.0 over the last three months. Echo Park topped the list of six neighborhoods with property crime alerts.

Fatal freeway shooting in South LA
Shot in the neck, the driver of a Prius had just pulled into the 91-Eastbound transition lane early today when he crashed into a concrete wall. That's when he lost consciousness and his connection with 911. LAPD homicide investigators say the driver was able to call 911 himself from his champagne-colored Prius before losing control of the vehicle. He told 911 operators he had been shot. Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the victim away, still breathing, but the victim died at the hospital.

LA could join backlash against traffic cameras

Officials expressed doubt Wednesday that the City Council would take the rare step of intervening in a police oversight board's decision to discontinue the city's red-light traffic camera program. If city officials decide to let the Police Commission's decision stand, Los Angeles will become the largest U.S. city to join a national backlash against photo-enforcement programs. "If you got a program that's not making money and is marginally successful, why would you continue to do it?" asked Councilman Greig Smith, who heads the council's public safety committee.

Rejecting red-light cameras in L.A.
Red-light cameras don't get a lot of love in this town from anybody except the Los Angeles Police Department, but it still came as a surprise Tuesday when the civilian board that oversees the LAPD voted to eliminate them. The decision flies in the face of police statistics showing that accidents and fatalities have fallen dramatically at the 32 intersections where cameras have been installed. But was it the right call? To us, the evidence in favor of the cameras isn't compelling enough to urge the City Council to keep them running.

LAPD reassigns Dodger Stadium beating case to elite unit
Los Angeles police officials said Wednesday that they have reassigned the Dodger Stadium beating investigation from division detectives to its elite Robbery Homicide Division. Though suspect Giovanni Ramirez, 31, was arrested more than two weeks ago, L.A. County prosecutors have yet to charge him in connection with the beating. Prosecutors asked police to gather more evidence in the case, and Los Angeles Police Department officials said they hoped to present the case again soon.

L.A. councilman calls for federal probe into homicide suspect's release on bail in Puerto Rico
A Los Angeles city councilman is calling on federal authorities to investigate why a Puerto Rican judge released a Los Angeles homicide suspect on bail last month. Councilman Paul Krekorian, whose district includes the North Hollywood parking lot where 19-year-old Mike Yepremyan was gunned down, said Judge Gloria Maynard's decision to release the teen's suspected killer is "so disgusting, so absolutely bizarre and inexplicable that I think it has to be investigated."

Fake cop harasses San Fernando Valley girls
Police say a man is posing as an officer to harass young girls in the San Fernando Valley. The suspect threatened to arrest one girl and told another he needed to put a tracking device in her bra. The suspect reportedly flashes a phony law enforcement badge in an effort to earn the trust of his victims. According to police, a sixth grader at Lawrence Middle School in Chatsworth was walking home alone on Friday afternoon when a man approached her near the intersection of Independence Avenue and Vintage Street.

Lawmakers indicate support for extending FBI director's term
Senators of both political parties said Wednesday they support extending FBI Director Robert Mueller's term for two more years but are worried about a legal constitutional challenge. Mueller's term ends September 4, exactly a decade after he took the job. Under current law, an FBI director may serve no more than 10 years, but President Barack Obama wants the law changed to allow Mueller to serve a total of 12 years.

State Budget Crisis

Union chief says Jerry Brown's tax vote is 'fraught with peril'
As Gov. Jerry Brown presses Republicans for a mid-September election on taxes, a major Democratic labor ally warned Wednesday that going to the electorate is "terribly fraught with peril." David Kieffer, executive director of the Service Employees International Union California State Council, instead wants lawmakers to reach a bipartisan agreement to extend taxes in the Legislature.

Prisons

California prison release no good for L.A. County, which could see 11,000 convicts, argues LAPD Union
The L.A. police union isn't happy with the state's handling of a U.S. Supreme Court order to reduce the prison population by about 33,000.Already reports indicate that California could miss a court deadline for kicking off the reductions unless the state legislature comes up with cash so that inmates can be sent to localities such as the L.A. County jail system.
