Crime alerts for Vermont-Slauson, West Hills and eight other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 10 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of LAPD data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Five neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Vermont-Slauson was the most unusual, recording 17 reports compared with a weekly average of 8.8 over the last three months. West Hills topped the list of five neighborhoods with property crime alerts. It recorded 21 property crimes compared with its weekly average of 10.5 over the last three months.

Coalition urges audit of California's alcohol-licensing agency
A community coalition formed after the Dodger Stadium beating of Bryan Stow called Thursday for a government audit of the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control because the agency has not issued a citation at the ballpark since the 1990s. "It seems like they're just ignoring the problem," Richard Zaldivar, who launched the coalition, said of the ABC's response to growing complaints about drunken hooliganism at the stadium.

5 suspects sought in 2 slayings at Venice park
At least five suspects were being sought Thursday by Los Angeles police in the shooting deaths of two men in their late teens or early 20s and the wounding of another as they were watching a baseball game in Venice's Penmar Park. The Wednesday afternoon shootings were thought to be gang-related, an LAPD spokeswoman said. The fatally wounded victims -- 18 and 21 years old -- reportedly were pronounced dead at the scene. The third victim is hospitalized with a leg wound.

South LA neighborhood meets about prostitution problem
Community members and residents in Los Angeles District 8 gathered Wednesday night to discuss the increasing problem of blatant prostitution in the area. The meeting was held at the Southwest Community Police Station where the Los Angeles Police Department provided a platform for frustrated residents to be heard and even offer solutions to this growing issue. Council District 8 is lead by recently re-elected Bernard Parks, Sr. and the meeting was facilitated by his Chief of Staff, Bernard Parks, Jr.

TSA officer arrested after items stolen from LAX baggage found in raid
A Transportation Security Administration officer was arrested Thursday morning after authorities raided his home and discovered $30,000 worth of items stolen from suitcases at Los Angeles International Airport, police officials said. Paul Yashou, 37, was booked on suspicion of felony burglary, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and LAX police officials.

Simple saliva test detects your 'real' age
A new test that uses a saliva sample to predict a person's age within a five-year range could prove useful in solving crimes and improving patient care, University of California, Los Angeles geneticists say. Their test focuses on a process called methylation, a chemical modification of one of the four building blocks that make up DNA. Add massive prisoner release to California voters' list of worries
The consequences of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation's release of dangerous inmates are an ongoing problem we've chronicled for some time now. It's only common sense to expect trouble from the early and unsupervised release of improperly screened felons. And with last month's U.S. Supreme Court decision ordering California to release more than 30,000 inmates, voters are rightfully worried.

Freed from GPS device, parolee allegedly takes part in burglary, shooting
Last Wednesday, as part of the state's effort to save money in the corrections agency, a parole agent removed a GPS tracking device from Lawrence Lamar Jackio, a 20-year-old gang member on parole for burglary. The next day, Jackio, who is known as "Poopie," allegedly made his way to Palm Grove Drive in Rancho Cordova, where authorities say he took part in a burglary and home invasion that turned into a gunbattle with the homeowner.

Unions wary of Brown's tax election
Gov. Jerry Brown has struggled to find the four Republican votes he needs for the centerpiece of his budget proposal-a special election on higher taxes-but he also faces resistance from the Democratic Party's most influential supporters. The public employee unions and labor groups that backed his election last year, fund the campaigns of the Democratic lawmakers who are essential to his success and would be needed to finance a ballot measure campaign have been cool to his push for a special election.

West Side commuters brace for 'Carmageddon'
Commuters on the West Side are preparing for 'Carmageddon,' the closure of the 405 Freeway from the 10 to the 101 freeways the weekend of July 16-18. The Los Angeles Police Department said they have been told to prepare for a back up in traffic that could reach the Mexican border. Speaking at a public meeting Thursday to help people get ready, police and fire officials said safety is their top concern.
