Crime alerts for Broadway-Manchester, Rancho Park and 11 other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 13 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of LAPD data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Nine neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Broadway-Manchester was the most unusual, recording 19 reports compared with a weekly average of 7.5 over the last three months. Rancho Park topped the list of four neighborhoods with property crime alerts. It recorded 10 property crimes compared with its weekly average of 5.3 over the last three months.

Woman locks self in minivan as it burns in Hollywood: LAPD officers come to the rescue
Cops indicate a woman locked her doors and froze up as her Dodge Caravan started to burn Monday morning in Hollywood. Luckily for her officers were nearby. It happened about 7:30 a.m. near Santa Monica Boulevard and Western Avenue in Hollywood. Officers Michael Kim and Jimmy Lam happened to be nearby helping out with the aftermath of a hit-and-run, according to an LAPD statement. Kim spotted the van start to smoke up and went to check it out. Lam followed.

Can't ban violent video sales to kids, court says
States cannot ban the sale or rental of ultraviolent video games to children, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, rejecting such limits as a violation of young people's First Amendment rights and leaving it up to parents and the multibillion-dollar gaming industry to decide what kids can buy. The high court, on a 7-2 vote, threw out California's 2005 law covering games sold or rented to those under 18, calling it an unconstitutional violation of free-speech rights.

LAPD reviews video of Giants fan Bryan Stow being confronted inside Dodger Stadium
Los Angeles police detectives investigating the assault of San Francisco Giants fan Brian Stow are examining a video posted by TMZ.com showing Stow being confronted by a Dodgers fan inside the stadium as he is watching the game. In the video snippet, purportedly taken in the hours before the attack, Stow can be seen seated during the March 31 game at Dodger Stadium trying to ignore the seemingly angry Dodgers fan. The fan is dressed in a blue Dodgers shirt with Banda 23 on the back.

Brown ditches special election, plans more cuts
Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday abandoned his plan to hold a special election this year on whether to renew expiring tax hikes and instead said he will balance California's budget with a combination of spending cuts and a projected increase in normal tax revenue. Brown announced the latest approach at a news conference during which he was accompanied by the leaders of the state Assembly and Senate, both fellow Democrats.

Corrections supervisors taking benefits cut
California is shrinking retirement benefits for the managers who oversee corrections officers at state prisons, saving $9.6 million next fiscal year. The rank-and-file officers guarding inmates negotiated away the extra pension contribution they'd received for more than a decade. In exchange, the officers will receive a larger salary increase in 2013 and maintain their vacation and sick leave system. Their bosses did not fare as well.

LA Fire Department Chief Millage Peaks announces retirement
Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Millage Peaks, a 35-year veteran of the department, announced his retirement Monday effective July 10. Peaks, 59, made the announcement to his executive staff and thanked Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for selecting him to lead the department. He also thanked firefighters, civilian staff and volunteers in the department, the Fire Commission and his family.
