LAPD announces rewards in 3 South LA murders
It was an emotional day Thursday for some local families as the LAPD announced three separate rewards offered for three unsolved murder cases. Police say these cases will remain unsolved unless they get the public's help. It's been almost a year since the corner of 77th Ave. and 64th St. in Hyde Park was covered in crime scene tape. Brandon Perry, 17, was shot dead on his front porch as he and his sister were commemorating the death of their father, who had died exactly a year earlier.

Off-duty LAPD officer may have saved a life
Officer Joseph Jarrett is practically a rookie. He hasn't had his second anniversary yet with the Los Angeles Police Department, and already he's being called a hero. And what's more remarkable, he doesn't even work the street. He's currently assigned to jail duty. "I honestly think I just did what any LAPD officer, or any law enforcement officer from anywhere would do," said a humble Jarrett.

Will & Kate royal visit: LAPD hopes to rein in aggressive paparazzi behavior
William and Catherine, the stylish royal newlyweds, arrive Friday in Los Angeles, and officials are hoping to tame the aggressive behavior of the celebrity-hungry paparazzi. For a variety of reasons both logistical and economic, law enforcement officials and some Hollywood photo agencies say it's going to be difficult for the paparazzi to give the royal couple the Britney Spears treatment.

Summer Night Lights is a bright spot for LA

Los Angeles' successful Summer Night Lights program kicked off Wednesday night. The program began in 2008 and was designed to curb violence in communities plagued by gangs. It was a fun night under the lights at Ramon Garcia Recreation Center in Boyle Heights, one of 32 locations throughout Los Angeles. "I like it because it's kid friendly. You're not afraid to come out because you see a lot of kids here, a lot of adult supervision," parent Norma Rodriguez said.

Bill to abolish death penalty in California advances
A proposal to ask California voters to repeal the death penalty was advanced Thursday by a state legislative panel after opponents of the current law argued it was an expensive and ineffective approach to violent crime. The Assembly's Public Safety Committee approved legislation by Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) that would put a measure on the ballot replacing the death penalty with life in prison without the possibility of parole as the state's most extreme punishment.

Thousands join hunger strike over state's prison isolation units
Hundreds of occupants of an isolation unit at the maximum security Pelican Bay State Prison have been refusing food provided by the state for days in order to protest conditions in units that isolate inmates from the general population. They've been joined by thousands of other inmates in the California prison system. The strike peaked over Fourth of July weekend with 6,600 inmates refusing to eat - the largest California prison hunger strike in over 10 years.

Countdown to the 405 Closure

LAPD: Avoid canyon routes during Carmageddon
Some commuters think they've figured a way around the 3-day closure of the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass. They think the winding canyon roads that link the Westside to the San Fernando Valley are the answer. The LA Police Department says think again. When LA freeways are backed up, LA's scenic canyon roads are a popular shortcut. That's why those living in the canyons are dreading Carmageddon and the spillover onto surface streets and canyon roads.

State Budget

California's debt rating outlook raised by S&P
Standard & Poor's has removed the immediate risk of a downgrade of California's debt rating, saying the state's plan to balance its budget was "largely realistic." S&P on Thursday raised its outlook for California's rating to "stable" from "negative." The rating, A-minus, still is the lowest of any of the 50 states. "The negative outlook had been linked to the possibility of a recurring cash deficiency that we now believe the enactment of the fiscal 2012 budget is likely to mitigate for the most part," S&P said in a report.
