Citizen Corps News Update
2.3 Million and Counting…
FEMA encourages businesses, schools, and individuals to ShakeOut on February 7, 2012 at 10:15 a.m. when more than 2.3 million people will participate in the 2012 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut drill . This is an opportunity for businesses to engage employees in a simultaneous drill to practice the recommended action during an earthquake which is Drop, Cover, and Hold On and to exercise earthquake plans.
Businesses, schools and individuals whether in the Central U.S. or elsewhere, are encouraged to register at www.shakeout.org/centralus. Participation is an easy and effective means to increase your earthquake and overall preparedness, as well as to get your employees, customers, students, families and communities talking about preparedness.
"Everyone has a role in disaster preparedness, and drills like this one offer a valuable opportunity for businesses, schools, all levels of government, and the entire community to put their preparedness plans into action," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "Participating in this drill, putting together a disaster preparedness plan and building a kit are simple steps that everyone can take."

Monthly FEMA Preparedness Call Tuesday, February 7 at 3:00 ET/Noon PT
The next monthly FEMA Preparedness call will be held Tuesday, February 7th , at 3:00 ET/2:00 CT/1:00 MT/Noon PT. Join us for this FREE event as we address the preparedness and readiness needs and interests of our state and local partners.
This month's call will feature:
- Low Cost, Creative Options for Community Outreach : Jodi Simpson of the St. Clair, Michigan Citizen Corps Council will talk about how her program has found smart and sustainable ways to promote preparedness in her community.
- We just have to show them off one more time! Learn about the White House Champions of Change event that recently honored 17 individuals and organizations doing innovative work to prepare their communities.
- Messaging on Children and Burn Safety: Safe Kids World Wide will talk about effective burn safety messaging.
- Free, Simple, and Effective Preparedness Activities: Get a quick overview of the new FEMA Course, IS-909 – Community Preparedness: Implementing Simple Activities for Everyone.

Tools to Help Emergency Managers Meet the Needs of Latino Communities

If you're interested in increasing disaster preparedness efforts within the Latino community, then don't miss this upcoming webinar.
Listen as presenters highlight components of the recently-released emergency management toolkit designed to improve responsiveness to Latinos in disaster planning, relief, and recovery efforts. This toolkit was developed by the National Council of La Raza in collaboration with the Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Mosaica: The Center for Nonprofit Development and Pluralism, and the National Immigration Law Center.

Get Ready to ShakeOut!
Get Ready to ShakeOut!
You only have seconds to react to an earthquake, so it's important to know what to do when the ground starts shaking. Join the more than 2.3 million people TODAY at 10:15 a.m. CDT and participate in the 2012 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut drill. It is the largest earthquake preparedness event in central U.S. history.
It only takes a couple of minutes to participate in the drill and practice these three simple steps:
DROP to the ground
Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops |
