'Southland' puts viewers on L.A.'s mean streets
The gritty TNT crime series uses former gang members and off-duty LAPD personnel to bolster the reality quotient of story lines that are usually filmed on location. This kind of authenticity is the hallmark of the show, now midway through its fourth season, which has garnered critical acclaim if moderate ratings for its attention to detail, gritty realism and ability to credibly portray the tribulations of LAPD street cops and detectives.

Prisons

Corrections chief hails the end of triple bunks at California prisons, symbols of overcrowding
For the last decade, the Deuel Vocational Institution in Tracy was so overcrowded that officials had to jam 650 inmates into a makeshift dormitory inside the prison gymnasium. Deuel Quad Sgt. Corey Johnson said having so many bunks in the gym made it difficult to see when inmates engaged in illegal activities. But today, the gym at Deuel is empty. It's the result of an ongoing decline in California's prison population prompted by a federal court order.

Legislation

Proposed legislation bodes ill for California's food trucks
Mireya Ingham follows her favorite food trucks on Twitter so she knows when the movable feasts set up curbside in her East Hollywood neighborhood. But some recent foodie tweets are giving her heartburn: A state lawmaker wants to significantly limit where lunch wagons can operate, keeping them even farther from schools than marijuana dispensaries. That could put many of the mobile kitchens out of business just as the industry is surging with creativity.

Redistricting threatens to tear L.A. City Council apart
