Homeland Security

The MSM goes wobbly on the NYPD's efforts to prevent another 9/11
It's sadly but plainly apparent that not everyone does remember the 9/11 attacks, as evidenced by the fact that so many people seem queasy about taking the steps necessary to prevent another attack from occurring. Witness the hand-wringing and caterwauling over the Associated Press's revelations that officers from the New York Police Department have been conducting surveillance on people all the way out on Long Island and even in . . . New Jersey! Civil rights trampled on! Police state! The horror!

Ballot Measures

Unions write big checks for campaign to fight dues measure
Some of California's most powerful unions are pouring more cash into a growing campaign warchest created to fight a November ballot measure that would curb their political power. The California Teachers Association gave $500,000 earlier this month to a committee to oppose the measure, which prohibits unions and corporations from using money deducted from employee paychecks, such as member dues, for political spending. Another $125,000 from a committee run by the Los Angeles Police Protective League was reported Wednesday.

L.A. mayor orders fire chief to stop withholding information
Amid a squall of criticism, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa late Wednesday ordered his Fire Department chief to stop withholding basic information about responses to medical emergencies. The mayor's unusually blunt order came after a day in which council members criticized the department for halting its years-long practice of providing the public with basic rescue response details, including times, locations and the nature of emergencies, as well as the age and gender of victims.

L.A. City Council urges end to racist, sexist language on radio
The Los Angeles City Council called Tuesday for radio outlets to put an end to racist and sexist language on the airwaves. The resolution, passed on a 13-2 vote, is a symbolic statement decrying a recent comment by local KFI-AM (640) talk radio hosts John and Ken. The duo, John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou, triggered protests when they referred to the late Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston as a "crack ho" on the air.
