Crime alerts for Toluca Lake, Arleta, 10 other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 12 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of LAPD data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Nine neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Toluca Lake was the most unusual, recording three reports compared with a weekly average of 0.3 over the last three months. Arleta topped the list of four neighborhoods with property crime alerts.

Man wanted by LAPD caught at border
A murder suspect wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department was caught at the Otay Mesa port of entry, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said Thursday. Oscar Eduardo Aguilera, 23, arrived at the border crossing on foot about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to Jackie Wasiluk, spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Task force targets home burglars
Police in Los Angeles and Glendale have formed a new joint task force to go after an alarming spike of burglaries in wealthy neighborhoods, including parts of the San Fernando Valley and L.A.s Westside. In the past three days, 13 suspects have been taken into custody, three of whom were apprehended Tuesday following a pursuit in Glendale that locked down nearby businesses, including a day care, and forced residents indoors.

Wilmington police chase ends in crash; suspect's state is serious
A motorist who allegedly tried to evade police in Wilmington was in serious condition Thursday night after crashing into a tree, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman. About 7:30 p.m., police officers saw someone driving erratically and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled and crashed into a tree at the corner of Anaheim Street and Figueroa Place, said LAPD Officer Karen Rayner.

Strange end to car theft
The owner of a stolen car spotted the vehicle, hopped into it with some passengers and headed home on Thursday - and was nearly arrested for grand theft auto, a sheriff's official said. "The owner probably should have let LAPD know he had found the car before taking it back," Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station Lt. Mark Hershey said.

Charles Manson says he won't attend his own parole hearing
Charles Manson is not expected to attend his parole hearing next week, officials said. A parole board will consider whether Manson should be released from Corcoran State Prison on Wednesday, though the chances of that happening are pretty slim. The board has rejected parole for Manson 11 times before. The Los Angeles County district attorney's office on Thursday said it would vigorously oppose Manson's release.

Connecticut poised to repeal death penalty
Connecticut was poised to become the 17th state to abolish the death penalty after the Senate passed a bill early Thursday repealing capital punishment. The 20-16 vote came at 2:05 a.m., after more than 10 hours of debate. The measure now moves to the House of Representatives, where it has broad support. Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has pledged to sign the bill once it reaches his desk.

Appellate court issues temporary stay on San Jose pension reform ballot measure
San Jose city workers on Thursday won a last-minute legal reprieve that stops the city's June 5 pension reform ballot measure from going to print -- for now. In a two-paragraph order, three judges of the 6th District Court of Appeal based in San Jose put on hold Wednesday's decision by a Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge overruling the unions' objections to the measure's title and wording.

Villaraigosa aide blasts city attorney over LAFD response data
In the latest escalation of the controversy over Los Angeles Fire Department response times, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's top lawyer on Thursday blasted the city attorney's office for allegedly improperly instructing fire officials to keep some performance data secret.

AEG unveils traffic plan for downtown
NFL stadium To help ease traffic from its proposed 73,000-seat football stadium downtown, Anschutz Entertainment Group is proposing to widen freeway ramps, direct fans to public transit and use smartphone technology to point out available parking spots. But AEG's most ambitious proposal would involve widening the notoriously bottlenecked northbound 101 Hollywood Freeway, where traffic leaving downtown is consistently jammed.
