Crime alerts for Toluca Lake, Arleta and 10 other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 12 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of Los Angeles Police Department data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Six neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Toluca Lake was the most unusual, recording three reports compared with a weekly average of 0.3 over the last three months. Arleta topped the list of six neighborhoods with property crime alerts.

Increased police presence on tap at Dodger's opening day
Los Angeles police officers will deploy in larger than normal numbers for Tuesday's opening day at Dodger Stadium, with a focus on fans who have arrive early to drink in the team's parking lot. Officers and the team have been working "for many months to create a plan to ensure a peaceful opening day," the LAPD said in a statement. The game is sold out.

Men drinking alcohol, passing handgun around reportedly shoot man to death in Van Nuys apartment
Two men were in custody Monday following the shooting death of a man with whom they were drinking in a Van Nuys apartment, police said. Police detained Tito Diaz, 43, and William Jimenez, 25, following the outbreak of gunfire in an apartment in the 14600 block of Friar Street at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, said Det. Rob Bub of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Station.

Cyclist injured after downtown road rage incident, friend says
Members of the L.A. biking community expressed concern and outrage Monday after a popular cyclist became the victim of what they say was road rage in a bike lane just blocks from LAPD headquarters. Susanna Schick, 42, of Los Angeles, was allegedly chased down Friday night by a white Lexus while riding in a green bike lane on Spring Street between Second and Third streets, said friend and cyclist Jennifer Beatty, who said she visited Schick in the hospital Saturday.

Mayor: LAPD outage 'may have been both' engineering, personnel failure
Just weeks after defending emergency response times for the fire department, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was in no rush to lay the blame on any specific engineering or personnel failure. "It may have been both," said the mayor. "There are personnel issues that precipitated it, but it may have been both." Villaraigosa said a comprehensive report will be available to both the relevant City Council Committees and the Police Commission as soon as possible.

Feuer honors slain LAPD officer with highway memorial
The Assembly Transportation Committee has approved Assembly Constitutional Resolution 100, which includes a provision by Assembly Member Mike Feuer (D-Los Angeles) that honors LAPD officer Ian Campbell, the victim of the 1963 Onion Field murder. The provision designates a section of California State Route 101 in Los Angeles County the "Ian J. Campbell Memorial Freeway."

Poll on L.A. mayor's race shows front-runners locked in dead heat
City Councilman Eric Garcetti, City Controller Wendy Greuel and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky would be locked in a dead heat if the 2013 Los Angeles mayoral election were held today, according to a new poll due to be released this week. A Center for the Study of Los Angeles survey of 1,600 residents showed that about 24% of registered voters who had an opinion about the mayor's race said they would vote for Greuel. About 23% said they would choose Yaroslavsky, who has hinted, although not announced, a run for mayor. About 21% would vote for Garcetti.

L.A. County could receive far less than expected in property taxes, estimates show
Los Angeles County could receive almost $50 million less than expected in property taxes next year, according to the latest estimates, which could lead to cuts in law enforcement, education and other services. Last year, Assessor John Noguez estimated that the county property tax base would grow by almost $18.7 billion for the next fiscal year. But he revised that figure to $5.1 billion last week.

California state worker unions reach tentative labor pacts with Jerry Brown
Four unions representing a combined 24,000 state employees have reached tentative agreements with the Brown administration to extend their existing contracts for another year. The extensions freeze the status quo for the unions until after potential ballot box decisions on a state tax hike in November, including one promoted by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Dodger Stadium shuttle set to roll for Tuesday's home opener
Instead of paying the usual $15 to park at Dodger Stadium, fans can take a shuttle from Union Station to the ballpark for Tuesday's home opener and the rest of the season. The Dodger Stadium Express will run 90 minutes before each game and 45 minutes after, with shuttles running about every 10 minutes, officials with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority said this week.
