2 arrested in Foothill area, 69 countywide in parole sweep
About a dozen parole agents and Los Angeles police officers teamed up Wednesday to conduct surprise checks on offenders in the Foothill area, part of the largest such countywide crackdown in several years. Parole agents said all those targeted have gang ties. In Foothill, that mainly means white-supremacist or Hispanic gangs. Countywide, 400 people - parole agents and federal and local officers - checked 340 homes in four hours. They arrested 69 parolees, recovering 35 knives, six guns, ammunition, four swords and a machete.

Two killed, one arrested in separate Mission-area shootings
Police are looking for the killer of a 25-year-old man shot Wednesday afternoon in Sylmar in what they called an apparent drug-related shooting. The killing came less than a day after an unrelated fatal shooting not far away in which police have made an arrest. Both cases are being investigated by Mission Division homicide detectives. In the earlier shooting, Tuesday night in Arleta, police said there was gunfire at the Plaza Romo in the 14000 block of Van Nuys Boulevard around 7:45 p.m.

2 Canoga Park schools locked down while police searched for suspect
Two schools were locked down for almost two hours Thursday afternoon while police searched for a wanted suspect in Canoga Park. Sgt. Hayley Smith of the LAPD's Topanga Division said the search started about noon when officers stopped the man at a Motel 8 and he ran away from them. She said the man had a felony warrant for his arrest, but she did not know the details. Canoga Park Elementary School and Faith Baptist Schools were locked down. After a search that included a helicopter, a police dog found him just before 2 p.m., Smith said.

Oakland Police radios failed during Obama visit
This city's year-old $18 million police radio system failed repeatedly during President Barack Obama's visit to Oakland on Monday and during protests surrounding it. Many of the 100 police officers assigned to presidential security duty that day were unable at times to communicate through their radios with police dispatchers, and even with each other, during the president's fundraiser at a downtown theater, according to the head of the city's police union.

LAPD IDs officer who shot, wounded armed man in Winnetka

Los Angeles police today released the name of the officer who shot an armed man last week in Winnetka. Bruce Oakley, a West Valley patrol officer, went to a battery call on Welby Way about 4:45 a.m. July 19. A man told police his roommate was inside. Officers went to a bedroom, where a man opened the door and quickly closed it. When officers forced their way in, police said, he turned toward them with a revolver, and Oakley fired, striking him once in the arm.

Law enforcement groups urge tougher background checks on all gun buyers
Despite the tough political climate for federal gun-control legislation, a coalition of law enforcement groups on Thursday called for background checks for all gun buyers and a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines in the wake of the Aurora, Colo., shooting. "After looking at what happened in Aurora, Colo., who could be in favor of these high-capacity magazines?" asked Hubert Williams, president of the Police Foundation and chair of the National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence.

California gun purchases nearing record
Californians just can't get enough guns and are on a pace to set a new annual record for the number purchased legally. Experts with the state Department of Justice predict residents will buy 725,000 rifles, pistols and shotguns in 2012, nearly twice the number they purchased five years ago, when 370,628 were acquired. Over the last decade, annual purchases have increased despite the lackluster economy and a dramatic drop in crime.

Scores of arrests made among Lancaster's ex-prisoners, sheriff's officials say
The recent release of several thousand inmates from the California prison system has resulted in more than 300 ex-prisoners under the partial supervision of L.A. sheriff's deputies in Lancaster, and there have been nearly 200 arrests among this group since October, authorities said Thursday. The post-release supervision of certain parolees sentenced for nonviolent and non-serious crimes now falls to individual counties.

Device unveiled to allow motorists to use freeway toll lanes
Los Angeles County motorists can start getting ready for a ride in the fast lane, if they're willing to pay for it. Transportation officials this week unveiled the transponder devices that drivers will need if they want to use the forthcoming toll lanes on the 10 and 110 freeways. The effort is part of one-year pilot project that is converting 11 miles of existing carpool lanes on the 110 Freeway, between the Harbor Gateway Transit Center/182nd Street and Adams Boulevard, and 14 miles on the 10 Freeway, between Union Station/Alameda Street and the 605 Freeway, to toll lanes.

Los Angeles to study tax breaks for studios
Fearful that Los Angeles will lose more television pilots to New York, the City Council on Wednesday called for studies on how to reduce or eliminate city taxes on film and TV production. "We have been working for the last decade to make sure we keep productions in Los Angeles," said Councilman Eric Garcetti, who chairs the council's Jobs and Business Development Committee. "We have seen the blockbuster films leave Los Angeles ... but now we are seeing a loss of television production."
