Crime alerts for Green Meadows and 17 other L.A. neighborhoods
Crime reports are up significantly for the latest week in 18 L.A. neighborhoods, according to an analysis of Los Angeles Police Department data by the Los Angeles Times' Crime L.A. database. Nine neighborhoods reported a significant increase in violent crime. Green Meadows was the most unusual, recording 19 reports compared with a weekly average of 9.5 over the last three months. Encino topped the list of nine neighborhoods with property crime alerts.

1,000-plus burglaries, thefts from cars in LAPD's Devonshire Division this year

Burglaries and thefts from motor vehicles have increased in the area patrolled by the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Division, detectives announced Monday. Economic hardships have caused criminals to focus on simple, but effective strategies for quick and easy gains, according to detectives. There have been 1,049 thefts this year in the division, which includes Chatsworth, Canoga Park, Northridge, Porter Ranch and West Hills, 856 of which could have been avoided, detectives said. The loses conservatively exceeded $1 million worth, according to detectives.

Three people shot in Vermont-Slauson neighborhood

Three people were in unknown condition after being shot late Monday evening in the Vermont-Slauson neighborhood of South Los Angeles, authorities said. The Los Angeles Police Department received a call of a shooting victim near 66th Street and Budlong Avenue about 8:55 p.m., Det. Gus Villanueva said. One of the responding sergeants on the scene notified the department about two additional shooting victims nearby. A male suspect was seen heading east on 66th.

Two arrested in 405 Freeway chase; one hides in storm drain
Two people were arrested early Monday after a high-speed chase on the 405 Freeway in a stolen vehicle that eventually stopped as one person hid in a Van Nuys storm drain to avoid police. Initial reports indicated only one person was taken into custody, but police said two people were arrested by about 6 a.m. The pursuit began about two hours earlier in the San Fernando Valley when officers came across a stolen white Jaguar, Los Angeles police said.

Mom arrested for leaving baby in a hot car in North Hollywood
A mother who allegedly left her year-old child inside a car while she went grocery shopping in North Hollywood - where temperatures were soaring above 100 degrees - was arrested Monday and the child was rescued from the vehicle. Police were called around 10:30 a.m. to a Ralphs grocery store parking lot in the 10900 block of Magnolia Boulevard on a report of a child inside a blue Nissan with the windows rolled up, according to Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman. The doors of the vehicle were unlocked, Eisenman said.

Parolee dies after swallowing drugs, getting Tasered, LAPD says
A parolee died after he swallowed drugs and was shot with a Taser by officers conducting a compliance check, Los Angeles police said Monday. LAPD officers with the West Valley Division's parole compliance unit conducted a check on the unidentified parolee about 11:15 a.m. Monday in the 18400 block of Valerio Street, said LAPD spokeswoman Nora Eisenman. When officers arrived, the parolee swallowed the drugs, Eisenman said. Information on the quantity or type of drugs was not immediately available.

L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck announce domestic violence awareness month
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and police Chief Charlie Beck Monday kicked off Domestic Violence Awareness Month by announcing that grants totaling nearly $1 million will be used to expand the LAPD's Domestic Abuse Response Team program. The DART program trains civilian domestic violence service providers to respond with police officers to domestic violence calls.

LAPD's Michael Downing to receive GSN/Raytheon leadership award
Michael Downing, Deputy Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department and commanding officer of LAPD's counter-terrorism and special operations bureau, has been named recipient of the 2012 "GSN/Raytheon Award for Distinguished Leadership and Innovation in Public Safety and Security". Downing, who celebrated his 30th year with the LAPD last April, will receive this honor -- and deliver a keynote address -- at the 4th annual GSN Homeland Security Awards Dinner, which will be held in a ballroom at the Washington, DC, Convention Center on the evening of Nov. 29.

Proposition 34 paradox
What's one thing that law enforcement and at least some of California's 725 death row inmates agree on? The answer is we both oppose Prop. 34 on the Nov. 6 ballot. Really - read on. Prop. 34 would repeal the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without possibility of parole. The LAPPL has joined with the greater law enforcement community in strenuously opposing the proposition. Now an attorney who has represented a number of death row inmates explains in a San Francisco Chronicle story how convoluted legal procedures surrounding capital punishment in California have caused most of the death row inmates to oppose Prop. 34 as well.

Jerry Brown signs bill allowing new sentences for young murderers
Juvenile murderers sentenced to life in prison without parole have hope of being released in years to come under legislation signed Sunday by Gov. Jerry Brown.vThe measure, Senate Bill 9, would allow some offenders to petition for a resentencing hearing if they were minors when they committed a murder that landed them in a prison cell for life.

Councilman Bill Rosendahl returns to City Hall after cancer treatment, ready for medical marijuana vote
Councilman Bill Rosendahl, undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer, returned to work on Monday and plans to attend the City Council's planned vote Tuesday on a referendum to overturn the city's ban on medical marijuana dispensaries. Using a walker to provide support, the 68-year-old Rosendahl said he wanted to send a message to his colleagues that "I'm back." His schedule will be based on how well he is feeling as well as the timing around chemotherapy.
