This year we recognize eight LAPD officers with the Medal of Valor for extraordinary acts of heroism. Seventeen LAPD officers will be presented with the Purple Heart. Two officers, Officer Alberto Ortiz, Metropolitan Division, and Officer Allan Krish, Wilshire Division, will receive both the Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart.
Four police officers: Policeman Charles ‘Rick’ Hallenbeck, 77th Division; Officer Roberto Sanchez, Harbor Division; Officer Nicholas Lee, Hollywood Division; and, Officer Christopher Cortijo, Valley Traffic Division, will be presented the Purple Heart posthumously. Their sacrifices and the bravery they demonstrated continue to live on in each of you every day you go out and serve our communities.
I want to thank The Los Angeles Police Foundation and Verizon for hosting and presenting this ceremony that allows us to showcase the great sacrifice and heroism displayed by those wearing the badge.
Officer Randy Simmons 8th Annual 5K Run Challenge Run, Crossfit and Bike Ride
On Saturday October 17, 2015, I encourage you all to participate in the 8th Annual Randy Simmons 5K Challenge Run which takes you through the hills of Elysian Park. This great event honors Officer Randy Simmons who some have come to know as the first LAPD SWAT Officer to be killed in the line of duty. But to those who knew Randy, he was a humanitarian who cared deeply about helping others. In honor of Officer Simmons’ humanitarian spirit, LAPD's Metro Division hosts this annual event that supports The Randal D. Simmons Outreach Foundation and their mission to assist children and families in underserved areas of Los Angeles. Casual and experienced bike riders can choose between a 26-mile bike course and a 50-mile bike ride. A thrilling experience for spectators will be to see tough athletes in the Crossfit challenge. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting this great event. For online registration, please visit www.Active.com.
Be safe out there and take care of each other.
Charlie
