Winterize Your Vehicle
| You may have prepared your home for winter weather; now it's time to prepare your car. Seasonal changes also mean changes to your emergency supply kit.
America's PrepareAthon! encourages you to update your vehicle's emergency kit with several items, including:
- A shovel;
- Jumper cables;
- A bag of sand or cat litter; and
- Warm clothes.
Avoid many dangerous winter travel problems by planning ahead. Before you hit the road, have a mechanic check items on your vehicle, including:
- Antifreeze levels ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing;
- Battery and ignition system terminal should be clean;
- Brakes check for wear and fluid level; and
- Tires make sure they have adequate tread.

National Weather Service Fog Safety Campaign
The National Weather Service (NWS) released new information to raise awareness about fog safety. According to NWS, fog contributes to numerous travel accidents each year because it restricts drivers' visibility.
When necessary, NWS issues two types of fog advisories . Visit the NWS website to learn more about these advisories and how they can impact you.
If you must drive in foggy conditions, follow these tips from NWS:
- Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination;
- Leave plenty of distance between you and the vehicle in front of you to account for sudden stops or changes in the traffic pattern; and
- Always keep your low-beam headlights on, even during the day. Use fog lights if you have them.

Tools for Creating Campus Resilience Webinar
FEMA's Emergency Management Institute, in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Office Academic Engagement, FEMA Region VII, and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) will host a webinar to discuss the DHS ReadyCampus program.
