Southern California law enforcement officials say there is no credible threat to the region's malls, in spite of a terrorist group video calling for attacks on shopping malls in Canada.“We have to not be paranoid or over-anxious about this,” Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michael Downing said.

Police Involved in Shooting in South Los Angeles, Suspect Sent to Hospital
Los Angeles Police officers were involved in a shooting on the 600 block of west 43rd Place in South Los Angeles around 2:30 pm this afternoon. Officers from a specialty unit were following up on an investigation when they saw the suspect of that investigation and an exchange of gunfire began, Officer Liliana Preciado told KPCC.

Couple Handcuffed During Encino Home Invasion Robbery
A couple was handcuffed during a home invasion robbery in an upscale San Fernando Valley neighborhood, police said Tuesday. At least four suspects wearing ski masks broke into a home around 10:30 p.m. Monday in the 4700 block of White Oak Avenue in Encino, the Los Angeles Police Department said.“ They were surprised. They were in bed when this home invasion robbery occurred. They were upstairs,” Sgt. Dave Gueto said. “The suspects entered from a lower library entrance. They pried open one of the doors.

Suspect Attempts Three Bank Robberies in Same Day
The FBI and partners the LAPD and the Culver City Police Department are seeking the public's assistance in learning the identity of a man suspected in three attempted bank robberies Thursday in Culver City and West Los Angeles. The suspect can be seen in bank surveillance photographs below and is described by witnesses as a black male with dreadlock-style hair and sunglasses wearing a black suit with a striped tie.

No Charges Filed Against LAPD Officers Who Fatally Shot Man
Prosecutors have declined to file charges against three Los Angeles police officers who fatally shot an unarmed, disabled man on live television after a car chase. In a letter dated Jan. 29 that was obtained by The Associated Press in a public records request, prosecutors wrote that there's insufficient evidence to prove Officers Armando Corral, Leonardo Ortiz and Michael Ayala didn't act in self-defense or the defense of others when they killed 51-year-old Brian Beaird on Dec. 13, 2013.

After 135 mph chase and standoff, driver in CHP custody
A driver who led the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles Police Department on a winding high-speed pursuit Monday through the San Fernando and Antelope valleys was taken into custody just before 7 p.m. after a lengthy standoff, authorities said. The pursuit began about 5:05 p.m. at the intersection of Saticoy Street and Topanga Canyon Boulevard when LAPD officers spotted a Ford pickup driving recklessly, Officer Sara Faden said.

Investigators ID Vehicle Owner in Norwalk ‘Party Bus' Crash That Left Man in Critical Condition
Investigators have identified the vehicle and the driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a husband and father of two in critical condition in Norwalk, authorities said Monday. The collision occurred about 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Fairford Avenue near Ratliffe Street, where 26-year-old Efren Virgen was struck by a “party bus” that kept on going. He was dragged more than 200 feet and was left with major injuries, including a crushed pelvis.

L.A. County Fire Department cheating extended beyond hiring, audit finds
Los Angeles County auditors uncovered evidence that the type of cheating undermining the Fire Department's hiring process extended to promotional exams and other testing requirements within the agency. Auditors said a search of department emails revealed at least nine different tests had been circulating among department employees. The breaches included civil service exams for fire captains and tests for driving and emergency medical skills.

2 Inland Empire men sentenced in terrorist plot to kill Americans
Inland Empire men were sentenced Monday to 25 years in federal prison for a terrorist plot to travel overseas to Afghanistan, join Al Qaeda and kill Americans, prosecutors said. Ralph Deleon, 26, a citizen of the Philippines who lived in Ontario, and Sohiel Omar Kabir, 37, an Afghanistan-born American citizen, were convicted in September after a nearly seven-week trial.
