Los Angeles city officials on Thursday dedicated a pathway in Reseda to the memory of a rookie police officer killed in the line of duty nearly 27 years ago, completing a mission started by the slain officer's friend.

Martin Reiser dies at 87; LAPD's first staff psychologist
Martin Reiser, the first full-time staff psychologist for the Los Angeles Police Department and a pioneer in treating troubled officers, defusing hostage situations and using hypnosis to elicit information about crimes, has died. He was 87. Reiser's death at his Los Angeles home Saturday was caused by leukemia, his daughter Mary Brusselsaid in an interview. He was diagnosed about a month earlier.

LAPD Investigating Multiple Shootings in Palms
Los Angeles police were investigating three separate crime scenes Thursday after multiple shootings in the Palms neighborhood of Los Angeles. The shootings began at about 3 p.m. at a park at Woodbine Street and Mentone Avenue. Two people were shot, including one who died. The second victim was taken to a hospital. The second shooting occurred about a block away at Regent Street and Clarington Avenue. One victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Man With Severe Autism Reported Missing In South LA
Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for a man last seen in South L.A. Gabriel Martinez, 19, has been diagnosed with severe autism. He was last seen around 2:10 p.m. Monday in the 14000 block of South San Pedro Street in the unincorporated area of Willowbrook, the LAPD reports.

Hit-and-Run Driver Sought After Striking Woman in Echo Park Crosswalk
Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck an 18-year-old woman as she was walking in a crosswalk in Echo Park Wednesday night. The woman was crossing northbound on West Temple Street at the Patton Street intersection at about 9:40 p.m. when she was struck, Lt. Nate Williams with the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The offloading of tons of cocaine, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, was used as a backdrop to announce record-setting drug busts in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and Royal Canadian Navy gathered on a San Diego dock Thursday, as the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell unloaded more than 14 tons of cocaine.

No plans for strike as L.A. city employee union talks make progress
Union officials representing about 10,000 Los Angeles municipal workers said Thursday some progress was being made in labor talks with the city, so there were no imminent plans for a strike. “In the last 48 hours, the SEIU 721 bargaining team and our Fix L.A. community partners have finally witnessed some movement at the bargaining table,” SEIU Local 721 President Bob Schoonover said. “For that reason we have decided to not initiate a strike today.”

Los Angeles spends more than $100 million a year coping with homelessness, including as much as $87 million that goes to arrests, skid row patrols and mental health interventions, according to a report released Thursday. City librarians, recreation and parks, sanitation and paramedics also devote significant resources to handling homeless people, without clear guidelines or a coordinated approach to guide them, City Administrative Officer Miguel A. Santana said in the 21-page report.”

Immigrants cautiously await hearing on Obama deportation programs
The program, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, or DAPA, is now tied up in federal court with a hearing Friday. DAPA would not provide a path to citizenship, but would make some applicants eligible for three-year work permits. Obama announced the program last fall, along with an extension of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, that would end up shielding 5 million people from deportation.
