A memorial service and 21 Gun Salute in Urbandale is honoring the police officers killed in the line of duty and the ones still serving in their communities. The Peace Officers Memorial Service is part of National Police Week. In light of the recent violence against police, the risk that comes with wearing the uniform has never been greater. New numbers released Tuesday by the FBI show more than three times as many officers were killed during a crime in 2014 than the year before. A total of 51 officers died during car chases, traffic stops, ambushes and responding to other calls.

In a 3-to-2 vote, Los Angeles County supervisors voted to cancel a 2005 agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and release 12 deputies from duty. Those deputies, stationed at LA County jails, were trained by ICE and had been able to take undocumented inmates into custody before their release to the general public.
