Celebrities and LAPD Hit the Links for Charity
Taking swings for charity under an unrepentant sun and sweltering heat added luster to the fairways June 20 at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena. In the shadows of the famed Rose Bowl, The 43rd annual Los Angeles Police-Celebrity Golf tournament teamed up the men and women in blue and faces in media, movies, and sports in support of widows and children of officers killed in the line of duty, or whose families endured other catastrophic occurrences. The charitable wing of the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Police Memorial Foundation, aimed to top last year's proceeds of $500,000 from among the estimated 10,000 visitors and sponsorships. Since its inception in 1972, the organization reports it has raised over $15 million.

One homeless voice is heard at LAPD meeting on crackdown
They're tired of side-stepping panhandlers outside the market and letting transients sully their well-kept parks. They're worried about rising crime, fueled by jumps in home burglaries and car break-ins. That's what drew dozens of Chatsworth residents last week to the LAPD's Neighborhood Watch meeting headlined "The Homeless: A Growing Problem." Officers blamed the crime surge on transients — reprobates and drug addicts whom cops are trying to round up or run off. In the meantime, they warned, don't keep your garage door open or leave anything in your car.

Police History: The evolution of women in American law enforcement
The story of women in American law enforcement is an evolving one. In many ways it parallels the tale of women in the general workforce, with some interesting twists. Today we are discovering the particular advantages of deploying both female and male officers, capitalizing on the synergy that develops when the gifts and talents of these crimefighters is combined. However, it took more than a century for this innovation to develop and evolve.

L.A. councilman takes rare step in bid to expedite proposed gun-lock law
The battle over a city proposal to require Los Angeles residents to lock up or disable their handguns at home took an unusual turn Tuesday, as a city councilman sought to force the proposed law out of a committee weighing whether to exempt some Angelenos from the storage rules. Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian, who has championed the proposed rules as a way to protect children from fatal accidents, is pursuing a rarely used maneuver to bring the draft ordinance before the entire council, instead of allowing a smaller council committee to continue to debate it.

Mayor Eric Garcetti backed off controversial legislation targeting homeless encampments, saying late Tuesday he would not stop the measures from becoming law but would block enforcement until the City Council softens some provisions.
