Judge inclined to release videos of Gardena police killing unarmed man
A federal judge on Monday said he was inclined to unseal videos that show Gardena police officers fatally shooting an unarmed man, noting that taxpayers are footing the bill for a $4.7-million legal settlement over the shooting. U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson said there was a clear public interest in releasing the footage and that records could only be kept under seal in federal court in extreme cases.

With man's arrest, a kidnapping case dismissed as hoax bubbles up again
Four months ago, 29-year-old Denise Huskins turned up in Huntington Beach, saying she had been kidnapped from her home here and held ransom. Vallejo police were skeptical, calling the case a “wild goose chase” and a waste of police resources. Authorities from the Northern California town even warned that Huskins and her boyfriend, who said he was drugged during the kidnapping, could face criminal charges themselves for making a false report. On Monday, the case took a dramatic turn.

Supreme Court Invalidates Los Angeles Law Authorizing Warrantless Searches of Hotel Records
In City of Los Angeles v. Patel, the Supreme Court invalidated a Los Angeles law that allowed law enforcement officials to inspect hotel and motel guest registries at any time, without a warrant or administrative subpoena. The Court ruled that the law violated hotel owners' Fourth Amendment rights because it “penalizes them for declining to turn over their records without affording them any opportunity for pre-compliance review.”

Pensions

Pensions fight gets new ammo
It's likely that California voters will be treated – or subjected – next year to a vitriolic campaign over public employee pensions. Backers of a proposed ballot measure, which would require voter approval of future pension increases, contend that too-generous benefits are diverting money from other vital public services such as police and fire protection.
