CHP and LAPD takes delivery of Airbus Helicopters H125s
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have taken delivery of new Airbus Helicopters H125s. The deliveries are part of the two agencies' multi-year fleet replacement plans. CHP recently took delivery of its third H125 (previously AS350 B3e), part of a five-year contract to upgrade its helicopter fleet. CHP has also ordered two additional H125s as replacements for the AS350 B3s. Completion services are being performed by Hangar One Avionics of Carlsbad, Calif.

L.A. files few charges in Ferguson police shooting protests despite mass arrests
When protesters flooded streets across the country last fall, furious over the police killing of an 18-year-old black man in Missouri, the demonstrations in Los Angeles stood out among the rest. There was no widespread violence, no burning stores or looting, but L.A. made national headlines for another reason: LAPD officers swept up hundreds of protesters in mass arrests. The numbers surpassed those in other cities such as Oakland, St. Louis and Ferguson, Mo., that experienced rioting and other violence.

Police: 'Target rich' environment of new residents, homeless attracting predators to downtown LA
A recent surge in violent crime and property crime in LAPD's downtown Central Division may be due to the growing number of homeless and non-homeless population in and around Skid Row, according to law enforcement officials and people who work in the area. Violent crime is up a whopping 60.8 percent so far this year, compared to the same time last year. Property crime is up 25.4 percent.

Police Looking for More Victims of Alleged Pimp Who Targeted Minors
LAPD was seeking more potential victims Wednesday of a pimp who targeted two underage girls, police said. Huston Hughes of Compton was convicted of human trafficking and pimping two girls under the age of 16, according to a news release. Police said Huston, 27, "enticed and persuaded" the victims while in the Los Angeles area between 2013 and 2014. Huston allegedly forced the girls into prostitution in Los Angeles and Pomona. Huston also sexually assaulted the girls multiple times over a period of five months, the news release said.

Deputies Find Missing Girl Locked in Sex Offender's Garage in Santa Clarita
A girl reported missing by her parents in Santa Clarita on Tuesday was found locked in the garage of a home where a convicted sex offender lived with his parents, authorities revealed on Wednesday. The girl's parents reported her missing to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on Tuesday evening when they were unable to locate her, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The family of a father who was shot and killed outside a San Bernardino bar pleaded for witnesses to come forward Tuesday to help catch his killer. Relatives of 35-year-old Adrian Cardona want justice for his four children, who also lost their mother last week, leaving them orphaned.

Garcetti likened attitudes on immigration to what has taken place with gay marriage over the past decade, as more Americans and politicians support allowing same-sex couples to enter into legally valid marriages.

From Greece to Detroit, underfunded pension systems are wrecking government services and depressing economies. Yet there's suddenly reason to hope leaders closer to home will realize that some short-term pain is required to avert full-blown crisis. This healthy pain involves stashing away more money and cutting expectations of outsized investment returns. A case for optimism is unfolding at the San Diego County Employees Retirement Association. Thursday its board is scheduled to fire its outside portfolio strategist and begin moving pension assets to safer, lower-cost investments run by a new, in-house management team.

San Jose, unions reach pension settlement
After more than three years of bitter fighting, city and public safety union leaders Wednesday reached a tentative deal that would end litigation over the Measure B pension reforms voters overwhelmingly approved in 2012. The proposed deal came after round-the-clock talks during the City Council's summer break on the day union leaders had threatened to walk out if they couldn't reach a settlement.
