A 5-year-old boy and his mother were shot and wounded Saturday in a shooting that the LAPD described as a gang-related retaliation. Guests were gathered at a child's birthday party in the area of 97th Street and Vermont around 4:24 p.m. when shots were fired at them from inside a passing vehicle, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

A Pacific Palisades neighborhood was evacuated Saturday when officials said they received reports of a large cache of live ammunition and weapons being found in a home. LAPD and a bomb squad were sent to the Pacific Palisades for most of the night, forcing dozens of residents to stay out of their homes for more than eight hours.

A man named as a “person of interest” in the slayings of three young children and two adults in Modesto was arrested on Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder, police said.
