Man Arrested In Hollywood Shooting Pleads Not Guilty To Capital Murder
Ezeoma Chigozie Obioha, 31, is charged with one count of murder with the special circumstances of lying in wait and murder for financial gain in the July 5 shooting death of Carrie Melvin, 30, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said. Melvin had a social media company and had agreed to market Obioha's “hoodfellas” clothing, according to LAPD Lt. John Radke. Obioha, who was already in custody, was arrested Friday and booked on suspicion of murder at the LAPD's Olympic Station, sheriff's officials said.

Police work to calm concerns about threats of increased gang violence
Police are working to calm concerns about gang violence after a cluster of gang-related shootings in South L.A. over the weekend and various threats on social media, The Times has reported. The death of 27-year-old Kenneth Lynn Peevy on July 17 sparked an incendiary claim that a gang had vowed 100 days of violence in retaliation for his shooting in Westmont. Among the Twitter conversations were the hashtags #100days100nights and #prayforLA. But LAPD Deputy Chief Bill Scott said Tuesday that the department's 77th Street Division had not seen a gang-related shooting since Saturday night.

Teen Suspected in Kidnapping, Attempted Robbery at Koreatown Apartment Turned in by Father
A teenager suspected of kidnapping and attempting to rob a resident at a Koreatown apartment complex was arrested Tuesday after his father turned him in, police said. The suspect, identified only as a 16-year-old male Hispanic, was taken into custody around 9:15 p.m., according to Officer Lopez with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Landlord Police Say Had Crossbow Taken Into Custody In West Hills
An individual police say was armed with a crossbow has been taken into custody after keeping officers at bay in the West Hills area. The Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations Division said the situation unfolded in the 22500 block of Criswell Street around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday.

Police Search For 2 Men They Suspect Shot Out Windows Of 5 Canoga Park Businesses Two men remain at large Tuesday evening after police say they drove by businesses in Canoga Park and shot out windows possibly with a pellet gun. Police said the shootings along Topanga Canyon Boulevard started about 3 p.m., prompting the businesses to board up windows.

Appeals court won't halt release of police shooting videos
A judge's decision to release videos of police in suburban Los Angeles shooting and killing an unarmed man will not be put on hold while the ruling is appealed, a federal appeals court decided Tuesday. A panel of the 9 th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined an emergency motion by the city of Gardena to stay the July 14 ruling by federal Judge Stephen Wilson.

Los Angeles Council Passes Ban on High-Capacity Firearm Magazines
Responding to the recent rash of mass shootings across the country, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to ban the possession of firearm magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The Council said the ordinance would close a loophole in a state law, which already bans the sale and manufacture of such magazines. Mayor Eric Garcetti said he would sign the ordinance.

California pension funds saw $100 billion gain in 2013-14
California's state and local government pension systems saw their assets climb by more than $100 billion during the 2013-14 fiscal year, outpacing the national trend by several percentage points, according to a new Census Bureau report. Although payouts from the systems to retirees rose by $3 billion, additional contributions from government employers and their employees and a sharp increase in investment earnings contributed to the asset gain.
