LAPD Investigating Possible Murder-Suicide In Crenshaw District
Los Angeles police were investigating a possible murder-suicide in the Crenshaw District on Monday. Investigators said a man called police around 5:20 a.m. and said he shot his girlfriend. He also said he was going to shoot himself. When police arrived at the scene, an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Potomac Avenue, they found a female and male not responsive and not breathing.

Authorities say they are searching for two men in connection with a smash-and-grab robbery in Woodland Hills. The Los Angeles Police Department, Media Relations division says the incident happened about 2:50 p.m. Monday at Edward George Jewelers at the Westfield Topanga mall.

Vacant Homes May Be Inviting Criminal Activity, Police Say
Police are warning residents Monday night about vacant foreclosed homes which they say are inviting criminal activity. Officer Mike Lopez with the Los Angeles Police Department says criminal are taking advantage of landlord-tenant laws by refusing to leave, essentially “squatting” until they're forced out. “They're establishing residency there and it's hard for us to have them legally evicted because they're showing proof that they're living there,” Lopez said. The LAPD says it's happening in neighborhoods all over Los Angeles with criminals fully aware that the eviction process can take between three to six months.

Woman in Critical Condition After Being Shot 8 Times in Reseda; Search for Gunman Continues
A woman was on life-support and in critical condition after being shot eight times in Reseda Monday morning, and police asked witnesses to come forward to help catch the gunman or gunmen who attacked her in the possibly gang-related incident. The woman, described as being in her 20s, was standing with two or three men in front of an apartment near Kittridge Street and Etiwanda Avenue (map) around 12:16 a.m. when she was shot, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

Ex-LAPD detective accused of making racially charged remarks sues to get job back
A veteran LAPD detective who lost his job after making racially charged remarks during a training session is suing the city alleging he was discriminated against because he was a "white police officer who was wrongfully perceived to be racist." In a federal lawsuit filed last week, Frank Lyga alleged his civil rights were violated when LAPD officials wrongfully decided to fire him because of his race. Lyga alleged the action was "motivated by political pressure" from the African American community, alleging a black officer would not have been fired for making the same comments. He is seeking to be reinstated with the LAPD.

Oakland police officer in stable condition after shooting
Oakland police say an officer is in stable condition after being shot by a sexual assault suspect. The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday when officers went to a home to follow up on a sexual assault reported the previous night. Police Chief Sean Whent says the suspect came out of the house with a rifle and immediately began shooting. One officer was shot. Two other officers returned fire, hitting the man. He died from his wounds.

Police Warn of Attempted Kidnappers in South Bay
A 27-year-old woman told police that two men tried to kidnap her after she got off a bus this morning in Manhattan Beach, but were apparently scared off when they spotted a nearby patrol car. The woman said she had just stepped off the bus at Sepulveda Boulevard and Eighth Street and was walking north on Sepulveda to 11th Street when a black, late-model Honda Civic with tinted windows cut her off, according to Stephanie Martin of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

Calif. cops pose as homeless to nab distracted drivers
Police in San Bernardino, California, are taking an unusual approach to stop distracted drivers, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy. Drivers assumed the officers were panhandlers, but had they read the signs, instead of whatever was on their phones, they would have realized they were about to get busted.

Manhunt Continues for Man Wanted in Shooting of Two California Deputies
Several schools were closed and residents were advised to lock their doors as a manhunt continued Monday in a remote Central California community for a murder suspect in the shooting of two Kern County, Calif., sheriff's deputies, reports the Los Angeles Times. Authorities say the man, wearing military-style clothing, is connected to a four-day crime rampage starting Tuesday with a kidnapping near Twin Oaks, 20 miles east of Bakersfield. It continued Thursday with the fatal shooting of a man, and intensified Saturday with the non-fatal shooting of two deputies.

Suspect in Memphis Officer Killing Turns Self In
The ex-con accused of killing a Memphis police officer has turned himself into federal authorities, ending an intensive two-day manhunt. Louis Goggans, spokesman for the United States attorney's office in Memphis, said Tremaine Wilbourn turned himself over at the federal building. His family was with him when he arrived.
