LAPD Gives The Gift of Life
Los Angeles Police officers are teaming up with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in an employee and community blood drive. According to Cedars-Sinai, a single blood donation can help save the lives of up to two people. The hospital normally uses 60,000 units of blood and blood components each year. Police Capt. Vito Palazzolo said the cause hits home for him. “Many of our officers have been transported to that hospital when they had gotten injured. We see first-hand the great work that they do,” Palazzolo said.

To the Los Angeles police officers who patrol the Southeast Division, Catherine Walker is a mother figure who greets friends and strangers alike with a hug and a kiss. For 20 years, the longtime Harbor Gateway senior has been extolling the virtues of a positive relationship between the police and the community they serve. And every year she brings the two together with a luncheon to show appreciation for the men and women who carry the badge.

$50K Reward Offered In South Los Angeles Man's Unsolved Murder
The Los Angeles City Council is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the unsolved murder of a South Los Angeles man. Juan Flores, 41, was shot to death outside his home in the 1400 block of E. 21st Street at about 2:35 a.m. on April 19 after returning home from a date with his wife, Maria Villanueva. Police say Villanueva got out of the car in front of their home as her husband parked, and that's when he was confronted by an unknown suspect and fatally shot. "As she went inside the residence, Mr. Flores was parking his vehicle and for no apparent reason, he was brutally murdered," LAPD Officer Deen Alcaraz said.

Recommended Parole of Cop-Killer Fought
Lawmen across the state are seeking to block the parole of a man who'd indirectly helped murder a Los Angeles cop in front of his 6-year-old son in a hail of machine gun fire in front of a Canoga Park church school. Unions representing Los Angeles police and California prosecutors this month joined with the widow of Detective Thomas C. Williams to attempt to block the recent parole of Voltaire Alphonse Williams (no relation), one of six men accused of killing the policeman 30 years ago to keep him from testifying in a murder trial.

San Jose Drops Appeal of Pension ‘California Rule'
Some thought an appeal of a court ruling blocking a key part of a San Jose pension reform could lead to a high court review of the “California rule,” an issue in an initiative ballot summary issued last week by Attorney General Kamala Harris. But dropping an appeal of the superior court ruling is part of a settlement of union suits against the voter-approved pension reform that, under a San Jose city council agreement last week with police, could soon be implemented by court action.
