A rise in violence plagues South L.A.: 'We can't police our way out of this'
Thirty minutes before the meeting at a South Los Angeles church was supposed to start, the parking lot was already full. Hundreds of people packed the pews of Hamilton United Methodist on Sunday — so many that some were left standing even after the choir lofts were filled. There were elected officials, community activists and gang intervention workers. LAPD commanders and a police commissioner. There were mothers whose sons had been killed on the city's streets, and one man who had been shot himself a month ago. Their goal: Stop the violence plaguing South L.A.

Legislation

Bills to regulate medical marijuana head to Gov. Jerry Brown
With California voters likely to consider legalizing recreational marijuana use next year, state lawmakers approved a package of legislation that would create the first statewide licensing and operating rules for pot growers and retail weed outlets since the state became the first to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Lawmakers in both houses of the Legislature pushed through three Democratic bills late Friday to set up the state's first regulatory framework for the free-wheeling medical marijuana industry, sending the proposal to Gov. Jerry Brown.

Bills sent to Gov. Brown would create new felonies, putting more in prison
Seven months after California reduced prison crowding to a level accepted by federal courts, lawmakers have sent Gov. Jerry Brown proposals that would create new felony crimes for which people could be locked up. Three of those four proposals would put more people in prison. And, following a familiar political pattern, all invoke powerful public tragedies, including serial murders in Orange County and a rampage at UC Santa Barbara in which six people were killed.
