Ride Along With The LAPD Mounted Unit
Saddle Up, LA is perhaps Los Angeles' most unique full-day, fundraising event. It is about as close to a ride along with the Los Angeles Police Department's Mounted Unit as one can get. To be held this year on Saturday Oct. 3, the day begins with a three-hour trail ride through Griffith Park guided by officers from the Unit and while most who choose to take part bring their own horses, arrangements can be made for those without to rent a horse and join in the fun.

Listings of transfer candidates and those who have been awarded “coveted” positions will now be posted on the department's internal Internet system.

Ex-con walks up to police officer and shocks everyone
It's a picture that has gone viral: an ex-convict praying with a Texas City police officer. The kind of run-in with the law that's getting Edward "Doc" Amey a lot of attention would not have happened five years ago. "I have not always been a friend to the police," Amey said. "I grew up selling drugs. I've been to prison three time." His rap sheet is several pages long, includes six felony convictions and several more misdemeanors. These days, though, Amey doesn't run from police—he runs to them. Several years back, Amey turned to God trading in prison bars for prayer.

What Bill Bratton Has Taught American Police
If Bill Bratton were to depart as Commissioner of the New York Police Department—as he hinted at this summer, then walked back—he would be ending an illustrious and controversial career as the most prominent American police reformer of the last quarter century. His leadership touches on valuable questions. How can American police chiefs win back the public's trust, after the police shootings and violence of places like Ferguson, Mo., and New York City? And what lessons can police learn from his storied career?
