LAPD gets $1 million for body cameras from Department of Justice
The Los Angeles Police Department was awarded $1 million in federal funds Monday to help buy more body cameras, part of about $20 million being distributed to dozens of agencies across the country to help spread the technology. The money from the U.S. Department of Justice will cover about 700 body cameras for the LAPD, a police spokesman said.

UCLA student's body burned beyond recognition
The body of a UCLA student found Monday morning in a Westwood apartment fire a block from campus was so badly burned that it will delay an official identification, authorities said. “The body has been burned beyond recognition. It (the identification) is going to take a while,” said Larry Vietz, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The Los Angeles Police Department initially reported that the dead woman's boyfriend was a person of interest. But by early afternoon that was ruled out, said LAPD Sgt. Marlon Marrache.

Teen Girl Dies After Being Thrown From Vehicle That Was Possibly Moving: LAPD
An investigation was underway on Tuesday into the death of a 15-year-old girl, who died after being thrown from a vehicle in Panorama City that was possibly moving at the time, police said. The victim was part of a group of teens who had been gathered on top of a hill in the 3500 block of Reseda Boulevard the previous night, according to Officer Arriaga of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division. At about 9:15 p.m., officers responded to the location after receiving a report of a vehicle versus a female pedestrian, Arriaga said.

City Council wants 911 operations brought back under Police Department
Citing harrowing constituent stories of dropped calls and busy signals during emergencies, members of the Baltimore City Council called on the Rawlings-Blake administration Monday to return the handling of 911 calls to the Police Department. Councilman Nick J. Mosby and Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke said the city's 911 service has become largely unreliable since it was moved to the mayor's information technology office several years ago as a cost-saving measure.

Federal grant will pay for 18 police officers in East Bay, including 15 in Oakland
A federal grant to help pay for 18 police officers in the East Bay — including 15 at the Oakland Police Department — was announced by Congresswoman Barbara Lee on Monday. Oakland will receive $1.875 million from the U.S. Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, to create or preserve police officer jobs. In addition to the 15 positions in Oakland, Alameda County received $250,000 to pay for two officers and Berkeley received $125,000 for one position.

Over the weekend, two sources indicated to me that the Chuck Reed/Carl DeMaio pension reform initiative would be pulled, re-written, and re-submitted to the attorney general for a new title and summary. If it is to be re-filed, it is worth considering for which ballot it would be re-submitted.

Border Patrol: Family, Kid Arrests At Border Soar 52 Percent
The U.S. Border Patrol arrested nearly 10,000 unaccompanied immigrant children and families caught illegally crossing the border with Mexico in August, a 52 percent jump from August 2014, according to statistics published by the agency Monday afternoon. Since the start of the fiscal year in October, border agents have arrested more than 35,000 children traveling alone and more than 34,500 people traveling as families, mostly mothers and children.
