Wounded boy, 11, describes chaos in shooting at South L.A. taco stand
It was an ordinary scene on a Wednesday evening in South Los Angeles: a group of adults and children sitting together in front of a taco stand, grabbing a bite to eat. From around a nearby corner came a black car with tinted windows. The vehicle stopped in the middle of the street. Suddenly, someone inside the car opened fire, sending the crowd running for cover. An 11-year-old boy recounted Thursday how he threw himself on the ground and began to crawl toward a nearby cellphone store for safety. He felt a burning in his right hand and looked down. He had been struck by shrapnel.

Police Program Aims to Pinpoint Those Most Likely to Commit Crimes
The strategy, known as predictive policing, combines elements of traditional policing, like increased attention to crime “hot spots” and close monitoring of recent parolees. But it often also uses other data, including information about friendships, social media activity and drug use, to identify “hot people” and aid the authorities in forecasting crime.

City Council

Minimum wage proposal comes to council
The proposed rules closely mirror rules established by the City of Los Angeles, however staff said there are a few Santa Monica specific issues to be debated Tuesday night. “The draft Santa Monica ordinance matches the Los Angeles wage levels and schedule, and its exceptions for small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and youth learners,” said the staff report. “It differs from the Los Angeles ordinance in areas where Los Angeles has not yet come to a decision, and where Council has provided specific direction: union supersession, service charges, and transitional jobs programs.”
